Origins of Weeksville
• Founded in 1838 by James Weeks, a freed African-American stevedore originally from Virginia, who purchased land in the rural outskirts of Brooklyn shortly after slavery was abolished in New York State.
• Weeks bought his land from another free Black land investor, Henry C. Thompson, on what was then farmland outside the main settlements of Brooklyn.
