Walter Francis White looked like a white man in Jim Crow America, but he was a Black civil rights investigator who risked his life to expose lynchings across the South. He infiltrated mobs, documented more than forty lynchings, and helped the NAACP grow into a national force. White worked closely with a young Thurgood Marshall, supporting the early legal fights that would later help dismantle segregation.
