Bed-Stuy gets its name from Peter Stuyvesant, the last Dutch Director-General of New Netherland (1600s). He owned large tracts of land in what later became Brooklyn, and the area was named Bedford–Stuyvesant to reflect that history.

Why he’s important:
• Helped defeat French, British, and Spanish forces during the Haitian Revolution
• Built massive fortifications to protect Haiti from reinvasion, including the famous Citadelle Laferrière (one of the largest forts in the Americas 🏰)
• Tried to create a strong Black monarchy to prove formerly enslaved people could govern a powerful nation

Amelia Bassano (also known as Emilia Lanier)

Amelia Bassano was a Renaissance poet (1569–1645) and one of the first women in England to publish a volume of original poetry under her own name. Her book Salve Deus Rex Judaeorum boldly challenged the patriarchal norms of her time, defending women’s moral and intellectual equality and re-examining biblical narratives from a female perspective.
She’s also famous in literary history for being linked by some scholars to Shakespeare’s “Dark Lady”, making her a powerful, mysterious figure at the crossroads of gender, race, and early modern literature.

THE SCHOOL THAT OUTPERFORMED AMERICA UNTIL THEY DESTROYED IT
They don’t teach this part of American history...
A Black high school that outperformed every white school in the country Harvard admissions, Ivy League scholarships, PhDs, generals, scientists, leaders.

And when excellence grew too strong...
the system didn’t celebrate it.
It dismantled it.

Dunbar High proved what Black education could do with support, discipline, and brilliance.
And policy not failure brought it down.

Why erase a school that made history?

We don’t glorify violence.
We reveal truth so history can’t repeat itself.
