After repeated comments from senior US figures about taking Greenland, buying it, pressuring Denmark, even hinting at force, almost 300,000 people have now backed a satirical campaign calling for Denmark to “buy California” instead.
It’s a joke, obviously, but it’s also making a point.
The campaign turns the Greenland “logic” upside down. If a powerful country like the US can openly talk about acquiring someone else’s territory because it suits its strategic interests, why not apply the same thinking back the other way? So Denmark “offers” a trillion dollars, suggests renaming California “New Denmark” and jokes about bringing things like universal healthcare and social stability along with it.
What’s more interesting is the response from Americans.
A lot of them are on board, some sarcastically, some not at all. Many openly say they’re fed up with a political system that talks endlessly about power and dominance overseas, while failing...
