Il mercurio doppio, dall'aspetto androgino, ha due chiavi, una per aprire e l'altra per chiudere, e con esse sovrasta l'intera creazione.
La coppia di chiavi rimanda ad un passaggio del Vangelo che allude alla corrispondenza sottile fra terra e cielo, ovvero fra tempo ed eternità: "A te darò le chiavi del regno dei cieli, e tutto ciò che legherai sulla terra sarà legato nei cieli, e tutto ciò che scioglierai sulla terra sarà sciolto nei cieli." (Mt 16:19)
