TIL 13-yr-old Canadian boy Briar MacLean shoved a knife-wielding bully away from a classmate. School officials put Briar in detention and phoned his mother to say that he was wrong to act on his own, and they didn't "condone heroics." His mom rewarded her son & his friend with a trip to Disneyland.

TIL of "Burro" Schmidt a gold miner in the Mojave Desert who started digging a tunnel through the mountains to safely transport his ore to the smelter. He completed the tunnel in 38 years, moving 5,800 tons of granite with a pick. In the meantime a road was built so he never used the tunnel.
