TIL most chewing gum is made from plastics. Before the 1960s, gum was produced with chicle, a natural latex substance from the sapodilla tree. Now Polyethylene and Polyisobutylene Polyvinyl acetate most commonly make the gum base of mainstream brands. It is not biodegradable nor compostable.
