TIL in the 1820s a Cherokee named Sequoyah, impressed by European written languages, invented a writing system with 85 characters that was considered superior to the English alphabet. The Cherokee syllabary could be learned in a few weeks and by 1825 the majority of Cherokees could read and write.

TIL that a 50 year old woman, Violet Gibson, attempted to assassinate Mussolini in 1927. She fired a gun once, but Mussolini moved his head and the shot hit his nose; she tried again, but the gun misfired. She was almost lynched by the crowd but was rescued by police and taken away for questioning.

TIL that Niki Lauda asked his fellow drivers in 1976 to boycott the German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring due to safety concerns even after he was the fastest on the track. Fellow drivers declined and Lauda suffered a crash in the second lap which left him with half face and scalp burned.

TIL Nurkhon Yuldashkojayeva was one of first 23 Uzbek dancers to perform unveiled on stage in 1923. In 2 months, aged 16, she was killed by her brother in honor-killing. The statue was built in 1967 to symbolize women's freedom but destroyed after Uzbekistan's independence in 1991 as being immoral.
