TIL that James Cameron altered just one scene of the night sky when Rose is on the raft because according to Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson, the star field Rose sees wasn't accurate for the time and place. Cameron asked him for the correct one and changed it for the Titanic re-release in 2012.

TIL in 1942 the BBC issued an appeal for postcards and photographs of the coast of Europe from Norway to the Pyrenees. It was actually an intelligence gathering exercise, they were sent to the War Office to help determine a suitable location (Normandy) for the eventual D-Day landings of 1944.

TIL about Borderlands 2 character Michael Mamaril. A Borderlands fan that died at 22 before Borderlands 2 came out. When his friends asked Gearbox if they would have Claptrap read a eulogy, they instead made a character in the game based off of Michael himself.

TIL how British Cmdr Terence Otway, wanting to be sure his men wouldn’t leak the D-Day plans, tested them by sending 30 pretty members of the Women’s Aux. Air Force in civilian clothes to the local pubs with instructions to do all they could try and get the info, but none of the men fell for it.

TIL in 1896 a temporary, one-day city was named in Texas called Crush, where two locomotives were to be smashed head-on for purposes of spectacle. It was, for a few hours, the 2nd largest city in TX with 40k attendees. The collision caused engine boilers to explode, resulting in death and injuries.

TIL celery was a very popular food in the 1800s through early 1900s. It was the third most popular menu ingredient in New York City restaurants, behind coffee and tea. Celery cost more than caviar because it was so hard to cultivate in those days.
