TIL the current chess grandmaster, Magnus Carlsen, intentionally plays non-book "inaccuracies" during opening (moves he knows aren't the best) to force the game into a non-book position ASAP so his opponents will have to think for themselves instead of going by memorised opening theory

TIL that cobalt (as in cobalt blue) is named for the German word for goblin, Kobold. It got the name because cobalt hinders the extraction of silver, and emits toxic fumes when burned, leading to the deaths of several miners. Mine-dwelling goblins were blamed for leaving behind these ‘cursed’ rocks.

TIL a library in Herculaneum was burned and buried in 79 AD when Mt. Vesuvius erupted. For 250+ years, scholars have been unrolling/attempting to decipher recovered manunoscripts from the only antiquarian library ever recovered. The site was never fully excavated; it is assumed more are still buried.

TIL that Keanu Reeves had a child with his partner, Jennifer Syme but sadly, the child was stillborn. The strain put on their relationship by their grief resulted in their breakup several weeks later and on April 1st 2001,she died in a car accident. Since then, he's not been in serious relationship.
