TIL in 1984 an 8 year old girl with sickle cell disease developed acute myeloid leukemia. To treat the cancer, the doctors gave her chemo and a stem cell transplant from her sibling. Not only did this cure her cancer, but it cured her SCD too. She remains disease free nearly three decades later.

TIL Japanese, but not European, honeybees can “slow cook” giant hornets to death, when they attack the hive. They do this by forming a giant swarm, a “bee ball”, around the hornet and vibrate their flight muscles to create heat. They warm the area up to 116°F, slowly “cooking” the hornet to death.

TIL that Ally's Law is legislation passed by several U.S. states that requires stores to allow people with certain medical conditions access to employee restrooms. It was named after a 14 year old girl with Crohn’s Disease who soiled herself in a mall after being denied access to a store restroom.

TIL about the Automat, a fast food-like restaurant with no wait staff. Patrons would put coins into a machine in order to unlock a box with food. At it’s peak in the early 20th century, an Automat chain was one of the largest restaurant chains in the world, serving 800,000 people daily.

TIL that all the urinals and toilets aboard the Iowa class battleships used saltwater to conserve valuable fresh water, except for one. The brig toilet used fresh water so that prisoners couldn't make themselves sick by drinking it.
