TIL zip ties are color-coded to show their intended use. Black zip ties are resistant to UV radiation and made for outdoor use, blue zip ties are metal-detectable and used in the food industry, red zip ties have high resistance and are used in electronics, and white zip ties are general indoor use.

TIL in 2012 a 22-year-old man on a business trip sent a wrong-number text to a woman 30 years older; she replied that she'd like to hang out anyway. They went to a concert together, started dating, got married, and in 2019 she needed a kidney transplant and he donated his kidney to her.

TIL the "chimichanga" was created in 1922 when a Tucson restaurant cook accidentally dropped a burrito in the fryer. She was about to say "chingada" (fuck) but changed her word to "chimichanga" (thingamajig), and it stuck.

TIL there are dairy farms with cows trained to use automatic milking machines, which will milk the cows automatically whenever the cow feels like it. The machines will even remember each cow individually, and push them out if they've been there too recently.

TIL sperm whales seek out habitats with large communities of bioluminescent plankton, which are not part of the whale's diet. As the plankton's predators (fish) approach the plankton, their glowing alerts the whale. The whale eats the fish. The plankton then turn out their lights.

TIL that Sam LLoyd, or Ted from Scrubs, was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor in january which had metastasized from his lungs. Further scans showed that the cancer was also in his liver, spine, and jaw. The news just came weeks after he and his wife received their first child.
