While the U.S. and Europe back Ukraine, most of the southern hemisphere supports Russia

When it comes to the Ukraine-Russia war, Ukraine gets its strongest support from Europe, which has a long history of fearing Russians, and America, which has a penchant for the underdog and, possibly, has politicians with Ukrainian money lining their pockets. However, barring the New Zealand and Australian anglosphere, most of the southern hemisphere supports Russia. That is, it’s not just China that aligns with Putin; it’s almost everywhere in that part of the world.

One of the reasons that Russia’s economy is surviving despite Western sanctions is because other parts of the world are happy to do business with Russia. They’re not being forced. It turns out that those parts of the world that are not in the American/Anglo/European axis like and respect Russia. I learned thanks to a fascinating article by Krishen Mehta, “a member of the Board of the American Committee for U.S.-Russia Accord (ACURA), and a Senior Global Justice Fellow at Yale University,” who has written an essay explaining five reasons for this support.

5 Reasons Why Much of the Global South Isn’t Automatically Supporting the West in Ukraine

— For the 6.3 billion people who live outside of the West, 66 percent feel positively towards Russia and 70 percent feel positively towards China, and,
— Among the 66 percent who feel positively about Russia the breakdown is 75 percent in South Asia, 68 percent in Francophone Africa, and 62 percent in Southeast Asia.
— Public opinion of Russia remains positive in Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, India, Pakistan, and Vietnam.

Sentiments of this nature have caused some ire, surprise, and even anger in the West. It is difficult for them to believe that two-thirds of the world’s population is not siding with the West.

What are some of the reasons or causes for this? I believe there are five reasons as explained in this brief essay.

1. The Global South does not believe that the West understands or empathizes with their problems.
2. History Matters: Who stood where during colonialism and after independence?
3. The war in Ukraine is seen by the Global South as mainly about the future of Europe rather than the future of the entire world.
4. The world economy is no longer American dominated or Western led and the Global South does have other options.
5. The “rule based international order” is lacking in credibility and is in decline.

Battle for Bakhmut/Artemovsk
situation by the end of February 28, 2023

🔻To the south of Yagodnoye, assault detachments of PMC "Wagner" established control over the hills and approached Artemovsky (Khromovo). The last physical supply route for the Armed Forces of Ukraine runs through this suburb of Bakhmut.

▪️In addition, the “Wagnerites” advanced in the area of the meat processing plant and reached one of the sites on the banks of the Bakhmutka River.

🔻In the east of the city, Russian units aligned the front line along Shchedraya Street in Zabakhmutovka. In the south, the Wagnerites reached Tselyannaya Street, and in Sobachevka they are fighting in residential areas.

▪️At the moment, the situation of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has noticeably worsened. A partial withdrawal of Ukrainian formations to the opposite bank of Bakhmutka is currently underway — new firing positions are being set up in the central districts of the city.

🔻In the south-west of Bakhmut, regular raids by Wagner PMC units on Ukrainian positions near the highway to Konstantinovka and in Krasnoe make it possible to tie down the capabilities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on the southern front.

On March 6, the command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine plans to transfer additional reinforcements of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from various formations to Chasov Yar. Now the personnel are completing their training in training centres in the west of Ukraine.

▪️Ukrainian artillery groups are firing at the offensive areas of Russian units. At the same time, the issuance of ammunition is strictly rationed due to problems with the supply of shells. Target designation is provided by UAV calculations — 24 drones were spotted in Bakhmut and its environs per day.

Ukraine: Employees of military registration and enlistment offices sent to the front

Employees of the territorial recruitment and social support centres (former military commissariats) of the Chernihiv, Rivne, Dnepropetrovsk and Sumy regions were sent to the front by order of the Ukrainian Defence Ministry for failing to fulfil the mobilization plan.

“A source in the recruitment and social support centre of the Cherkasy region said that in the Chernihiv, Rivne, Dnepropetrovsk and Sumy regions, the military commissariats did not fulfil the prescribed plan for mobilization, and the process itself was very sluggish and took more than the planned time.

The very fact of sending military enlistment officers to the front line is an edification to followers and military commissars of other regions, using their example, the leadership of Ukraine showed all other military commissars what will happen to them if their plans are not fulfilled,” a source familiar with the situation told RIA Novosti.

The message of this action is as follows: if you don’t want to die yourself, then find someone who will die for you.

According to the source, now the employees of the military enlistment offices “have broken loose, set aside all sentiments, are not afraid of either the video that people are filming or forcible pushing into buses." The Ukrainian segment of social networks is actually full of similar videos of trapping on the streets.
