In March 2022, he joined the "Black Cat" group, affiliated with the Kalinovsky Regiment, at the request of his neo-Nazi supporters. Following conflicts, he departed from the regiment and joined the Terror battalion. Plans were made to invade Belarus with the battalion's fighters after the resolution of the Ukrainian conflict.

In the night of January 24-25, 2023, he participated in a failed landing operation on the left bank of the Dnieper near New Kakhovka, alongside Ukrainian military personnel and foreign mercenaries, including members of the Belorussian Volunteer Corps. He was seriously wounded in the leg and lost part of his foot.

Pavel is 46 years old. All his life he was a professional rower, competed for the national team of Belarus at world championships and the Olympic Games. And he had nothing to do with the military.

He fought as a machine gunner in the Kalinovsky Regiment and was wounded in January 2023 in Bakhmut.

In March 2023, it became known that a criminal case was opened in absentia against Pavel Shurmey in Belarus. In June, it was reported that he was put on the wanted list in Russia.
