Biden remarks on Taiwan leave administration scrambling

President Biden's public remarks Thursday that the United States would come to Taiwan's defense if it were attacked by China left White House officials scrambling to explain it did not represent a shift in U.S. policy.

Fears that China might invade Taiwan have been on the rise as Beijing has been flying military aircraft into Taiwan's airspace on a near-daily basis. The heavy military presence has left China watchers recalculating over what Beijing's aims might be with Taiwan.

As a result, Biden's answer to a question at a CNN town hall about whether the U.S. would defend Taiwan if it were attacked by China - "yes, we have a commitment," the president said - was major news and led to a predictably tough response from China.

US surgeons successfully test pig kidney transplant in human patient

For the first time, a pig kidney has been transplanted into a human without triggering immediate rejection by the recipient's immune system, a potentially major advance that could eventually help alleviate a dire shortage of human organs for transplant.

The procedure done at NYU Langone Health in New York City involved the use of a pig whose genes had been altered so that its tissues no longer contained a molecule known to trigger almost immediate rejection.

The recipient was a brain-dead patient with signs of kidney dysfunction whose family consented to the experiment before she was due to be taken off life support, researchers told Reuters.

State Department Privately Admits 'Nearly 400' Americans Still Stuck In Afghanistan

However, months later, according to the Washington Free Beacon, we have a more exact amount — nearly 400 — far beyond the vague estimates given by officials.

The outlet describes 363 Americans overall who are "stuck" in the Taliban-controlled country, whereas 176 of them want out of Afghanistan "immediately."
"I think it's irresponsible to say Americans are stranded. They are not," Jen Psaki said back in August.

Colombia's armed forces have captured Dairo Antonio Usuga, known as Otoniel, in the biggest blow to drug trafficking in the Andean country since the death of Pablo Escobar, President Ivan Duque said on Saturday.

Otoniel, 50 , was captured during operation Osiris in a rural area of Colombia's Uraba region, located in Antioquia province. He is accused of sending dozens of shipments of cocaine to the United States, and Duque said he is also accused of killing police officers, recruiting minors, and sexually abusing children among other crimes.

Colombia had offered a reward of up to 3 billion pesos (about $800,000) for information concerning Otoniel's whereabouts, while the U.S. government had put up a reward of $5 million for help locating him.

"This is the biggest blow against drug trafficking in our country this century," Duque said during a broadcast video message. "This blow is only comparable to the fall of Pablo Escobar in the 1990s."

Scientists from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Friday took aim at the question of whether the Delta variant of the coronavirus causes more severe disease, finding no significant differences in the course of hospitalized patients’ illnesses during the Delta wave compared to earlier in the pandemic.
