Novavax COVID-19 vaccine gets first authorization; expects more within weeks, CEO says
Novavax Inc (NVAX.O) expects regulators in India, the Philippines and elsewhere to make a decision on its COVID-19 vaccine within "weeks," its chief executive told Reuters, after the shot on Monday received its first emergency use authorization (EUA) from Indonesia.
Novavax shares were up about 13% after the company also said it had filed an application for emergency use of the vaccine to Canada and the European Medicines Agency.
For Indonesia, the shot will be manufactured by the world's largest vaccine manufacturer, Serum Institute in India (SII), and sold under the Indian company's brand name, Covovax. Novavax said initial shipments into Indonesia are expected to begin imminently.

Former President Donald Trump made a brief cameo Monday night in Glenn Youngkin's campaign for governor of Virginia, telling voters that the Republican is a "fantastic guy" who will "do a job like nobody can do."

Facebook will shut down facial recognition system
Facebook Inc announced on Tuesday it is shutting down its facial recognition system which automatically identifies users in photos and videos, citing growing societal concerns about the use of such technology.
"Regulators are still in the process of providing a clear set of rules governing its use," said Jerome Pesenti, vice president of artificial intelligence at FB, in a blog post. "Amid this ongoing uncertainty, we believe that limiting the use of facial recognition to a narrow set of use cases is appropriate."
The company, which last week renamed itself Meta Platforms Inc, said more than one-third of Facebook's daily active users have opted into the face recognition setting on the social media site, and the change will now delete the "facial recognition templates" of more than 1 billion people.
The removal will roll out globally and is expected to be complete by December, a Facebook spokesperson said.

The U.S. Marshals Service plans to move about 400 inmates out of the D.C. jail after a recent surprise inspection found evidence of “systemic” mistreatment of detainees, including unsanitary living conditions & the punitive denial of food and water, officials said.
U.S. marshals found “large amounts of standing human sewage ... in the toilets of multiple occupied cells” and many cells in which water “had been shut off for days,” Ruffin wrote.” He said jail staff members “were observed antagonizing detainees” and “directing detainees to not cooperate” with the review. One prisoner was warned by a staff member to “stop snitching.”
The inspection from Oct. 18-23 began 5 days after a fed. judge found the jail warden & D.C. Corrections Director Quincy Booth in contempt of court in a case involving the alleged mistreatment of a detainee charged from Jan 6th.

Fentanyl seizures at border double over the past 12 months: report
Seizures of fentanyl at the southern border have spiked over the past 12 months, doubling the amount of the lethal drug confiscated a year earlier, according to a report on Tuesday.
In the period from October 2020 to September 2021, Customs and Border P rotection officials seized 11,201 pounds of fentanyl, the Washington Examiner reported.
One kilogram of fentanyl is equivalent to 500,000 lethal doses, the federal government estimates, meaning the seizures represent 2.5 billion doses prevented from entering the country, the report said.
In fiscal year 2020, 4,791 pounds of fentanyl were confiscated.
The increase in seizures is closely connected to the jump in overdose deaths in the US.
“If they’re seizing a lot, it’s because a lot is coming in — because you don’t know the percentage of how much is coming through that they’re actually seizing,” Dr. Joshua Sharfstein, vice dean for public health practice and community engagement at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore , told the Washington Examiner.
Dr. Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, part of the National Institutes of Health, told the newspaper that fentanyl is easier to produce and transport, but much more deadly than other drugs.
