"Wisconsin's governor received a complaint Monday seeking the removal of Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm after his office recommended $1,000 bail for a man who authorities say later drove his SUV through a Christmas parade in a nearby county, killing six people.

A group of people who say they are Milwaukee County taxpayers filed the complaint Friday asking Evers to remove Chisholm to prevent similarly low bail recommendations in future cases involving violent offenders such as suspected car killer Darrell Brooks.

Despite the recent panic about Omicron variant, global Covid deaths are at the lowest point of the year, and cases actually flat for the past 2 weeks. This is despite the addition of a large number of less severe Omicron cases. In particular, cases in the EU are declining, starting from the east (Russia, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Romania, Austria, Germany, etc.). Even in the UK –wheresome ofthe most sensational headlines come from –fatalities declined ~30% over the past month, and are down over 90% from the highs earlier this year. In South Africa, where the new strain was first detected, deaths are also declining the last few weeks, and down 95% from January highs. Correlating and lagging COVID cases and deaths in South Africa indicates Omicron’s mortality rate is very low (an appropriately lagged deaths to cases ratio is ~25 times lower than in the previous peak).

Inmates can remain in home confinement after COVID-19 emergency ends, DOJ rules

The Justice Department announced Tuesday that thousands of inmates who were released to home confinement during the COVID-19 pandemic should not automatically be re-imprisoned after the health emergency ends.

Attorney General Merrick Garland directed the DOJ to grant the U.S. Bureau of Prisons discretion to decide if prisoners released to home confinement should be returned to federal facilities or remain at their houses. This reverses a decision under the Trump DOJ that would have recalled nearly 8,000 prisoners released under the CARES Act.
