The the criteria for a so-called technical recession has been met after the U.S. economy shrank in the spring for the 2nd consecutive quarter.

Inflation is raging and higher interest rates have forced consumers and businesses to pull back on spending.

The GDP is “the broadest measure of goods and services produced across the economy”. It shrank by 0.9% in the 3 month period from April through June.
Refinitiv economists were expecting the report to show the economy had expanded by 0.5%.

Economic output had already fallen in the first 3 months of 2022 w/ GDP falling 1.6%.
