Rep. Gohmert Demands ‘Welfare Check’ of Jan. 6 Prisoners Following Assault and Lockdown at DC Jail

After the assault of several Jan. 6 prisoners and subsequent lockdown at the District of Columbia jail, United States Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) is demanding a welfare check on the inmates.

The perpetrator of the alleged assaults was Lt. Crystal Lancaster. She is the guard in charge of the solitary confinement area known as “The Hole” at the CTF.

One of the assaulted prisoners was Ryan Nichols. According to a habeas petition (pdf) filed with the United States District Court, District of Columbia by Nichols’s attorney, Joseph McBride, Lancaster “verbally and mentally abuses inmates.” Lancaster “also oversees officers and guards who do the same, and is suspected of bringing drugs into the prison.”

A Delaware judge ruled Wednesday that a new vote-by-mail law enacted earlier this year is unconstitutional and that voting by mail cannot be used in the November election.

Biden May Buy Oil Just Below $80; Democrats Stymied Trump at $24

The Biden administration is considering replenishing the Strategic Petroleum Reserve when oil dips below $80 a barrel, just two years after Democrats prevented former President Donald Trump from filling the reserve at a fraction of that price.

Trump in March 2020 was looking to stabilize the oil industry after Covid-19 hit in 2020 and crushed global oil demand. With oil priced at the time at about $24 a barrel, Republicans proposed spending $3 billion to fill up the reserves. But the idea became a political football in larger negotiations over trillions of dollars in coronavirus relief, with Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer declaring his party halted a “big oil bailout.”

Filling the reserves will also require more oil than it did two years ago. In March 2020, the reserve contained 634 million barrels out of a capacity of 727 million barrels. After a record drop last week, reserves fell to 442 million barrels, their lowest level since 1984.
