Germany’s vice chancellor has said that next winter’s gas supplies to his country have not so far been secured. Robert Habeck, who also serves as the economy and climate minister, hasn’t ruled out there being a so-called domino effect, with a setback in the gas supply chain causing a knock-on shortage in other facilities.

“If we don’t receive further gas supplies … and the deliveries from Russia are capped or stopped, we wouldn’t have enough to keep all our houses warm and to keep all our industry running,” Habeck said, in an interview with the German radio station Deutschlandfunk.

❗️Brazil reverses Telegram ban

The Supreme Court has revoked its ban after the company complied by censoring President Jair Bolsonaro and other accounts. Telegram was blocked on Friday for alleged misinformation being shared on the platform.

CEO Pavel Durov apologized and worked to implement the court’s demands – claiming that the company had missed its emails.

According to reports, Telegram subsequently deleted “classified information shared by the account of President Jair Bolsonaro” and removed accounts belonging to a Bolsonaro supporter who had been accused of spreading “misinformation.”

Telegram has also implemented other measures in Brazil, including the promotion of “verified” content and warnings which inform users if a post is supposedly inaccurate.

Zelensky bans main Ukrainian opposition party

Ukraine has moved to suspend the activities of almost a dozen opposition parties, including the parliament’s second-largest group, Opposition Platform – For Life, for as long as the conflict with Russia continues.

It was made “given the full-scale war and the ties of some political structures with this state,” he said, apparently referring to Russia. According to Zelensky, the activities of the opposition parties will be put on hold “for the period of martial law.”

EU approves creation of European military force

The EU has approved a common defense strategy that involves the creation of a 5,000-strong deployment force - the so-called “Strategic Compass” plan - for the first time in the bloc’s history.

Latvian FM Edgars Rinkēvičs said the initiative provides a “necessary toolbox for the EU to become a real geopolitical defense and security player together with NATO,” and is only the “beginning of the journey”.

The plan, first mentioned in 2020, is aimed at improving cooperation between existing European militaries and NATO, cyber-defense consolidation, and facilitating joint R&D programs.
