Poland’s Agriculture Chief Resigns After EU Ignores Protesting Farmers

Pressure from farmers protesting cheap Ukrainian grain on the Polish market has forced the country’s Minister of Agriculture, Henryk Kowalczyk, to resign.

According to him, while the government did make a deal with the protesters to appeal to the EU to restore import tariffs on Ukrainian grain - Brussels has remained intent on extending the toll-free regime.

“As the main demand by the [Polish] farmers is not going to be satisfied, I have decided to resign,” Kowalczyk said, adding, "I wish luck to my successor.”
