Tropical storm Nicholas slows to a crawl over Texas and Louisiana— Knocks out power to a half-million homes

Nicholas made landfall as a Category-1 hurricane Tuesday and dumped more than a foot of rain along the same area swamped by Hurricane Harvey, in 2017. Nicholas could slow over storm-battered Louisiana and bring life-threatening floods across the south over the coming days, forecasters say.

More than a half-million homes and businesses lost power in Texas, according to the website Poweroutage. The surges were likely caused by strong winds as the storm raged through overnight, utility officials said. In Louisiana, around 100,000 customers remained without power at midday on Tuesday.
