One of the most poignant analogies I’ve ever come across in my life is this one:
You’re on the stage. You dance and sing and try to do your best in your role. The stage lights are hot on your face and you’re blinded by their brightness and your own preoccupation with impressing the audience.
You sweat.
You’re tired.
Your feet hurt.
You keep going.
And then the lights switch off with the giant THUNK that only large electrical circuits can make. And you look out into the auditorium to see rows and rows and rows of empty
seats.
Stop dancing.
