UK Prices Soar as Inflation Hits 10-Year High

Rising fuel and clothing prices drove a surge in inflation to its highest level in more than a decade, UK official figures show – the Consumer Price Index (CPI) increasing 5.1% in the 12 months to November.

The CPI figure exceeded the expectations of City analysts, who predicted 4.7%, and far outstripped the Bank of England’s (BoE) forecast of 4.5%.

The results will put pressure on the BoE to increase interest rates from a record low of 0.1% in its committee meeting Thursday. It would be the first rate rise since 2018 and the first large central bank to increase rates since the start of the pandemic.

Creditors SUE China Evergrande for Claims Topping $13 Billion (reports)

A Chinese court assigned to handle civil lawsuits against Evergrande has accepted 367 cases - with claims totalling $13.2bn, according to court records. (Financial Times)

The cases were accepted between late August and earlier this month, in the period after financial regulators told the property developer to resolve its debt issues and prior to Fitch Ratings downgrading Evergrande to ‘restricted default’ last week.

According to the FT - citing an unnamed Evergrande exec - the company is not able to repay so many creditors with its limited resources.
