There is no "proper" way to go about it. Just free your space of sound and interference and sit and spend some time in the silence. If that silence is too difficult at first, fill it up by speaking with God. WITH. Try to listen too. The thoughts flowing into your mind aren't random.

So true. Long ago people understood that their thoughts were not generated by them, but rather flowed from the divine realm.
This is still true if we can get our ego-based thoughts out of the way.
They are like mould growing over something lovely and obscuring it. Covering it up and making it hard to see what was there originally.
Our TRUE thoughts are of and from God. The trick is getting out of our own way long enough to hear them. This takes practice and a dedicated approach to making time to listen.
Hence, meditation.
It’s not hard.
But it does take a sincere desire to get to Truth.
This is still true if we can get our ego-based thoughts out of the way.
