Personal opinion of an old guy who loves to cook:
Old cast iron is the best. Yard sales, moving sales(who wants to move that heavy stuff), flea markets, antique stores, etc. Things to look for are cracks (pretty obvious), pitting (can be fixed but rarely worth the effort), and you need to check the bottom for flatness. If it was used over open fire, the bottom can droop and if too hot on a small burner the bottom can dome and liquid will run to the edges. Cruddy is okay. It’s not difficult to clean and reseason.
I have a hand me down Griswold #7 that was old when I was young. It was a hand me down to my mom as well. It prejudiced me. I hunt Griswold like crazy. Wagoner is also very good and usually less expensive. As I find older or nicer examples, I retire the newer.
Newer versions are fine in reality but in the case of Lodge tend to be heavier and take longer to heat. Yeti has branded some good quality ones but predictably are more expensive than the collectors level antiques.
If anyone has questions, feel free to tag me.
If you read this far, thanks.

This is the current “cast” of characters in rotation. Don’t tell Mary - there’s more than that hidden in the basement. Most brands are proud and mark their names prominently. My son has a no name pan that is only marked Taiwan and it is surprisingly good.
If a pan is rusty or thickly crusted with seasoning gone bad I take an SOS pad to it as a first step. It’s the only time I use soap. If that doesn’t do it I put it in the oven upside down with a cookie sheet the next rack down and run the self cleaning cycle. Some folks use electrolysis or concentrated vinegar, but for all the more often I do it, the oven works fine.
It will come out in the white. Anything that touches it will affect it, so my sweaty hands are in gloves. I rub a high temp oil like Avocado or Grapeseed very lightly and evenly on every surface and bake it upside down on 400 for a few hours.

Then, after each use I wash with water and a non soap scrubber (mine is like chainmail) and dry it very dry (water is the enemy) and heat it back up on the stove. Then spread a quarter sized drop of oil and let get hot enough to smoke. The seasoning will keep getting better the more you use it.

“We are in a moment of sacred pause, of needing to surrender to the new, super-refined levels of Love Light that are streaming into our crystalline biocircuitry and the crystalline grid.
This cosmic energy filtered thru the Mercury (mind) & Mars (body) retrograde cycles continues to facilitate major purifications of the body mind which may require extra R&R. Not easy to do with the celebration of Harvest Season approaching in the US tomorrow...which is intentional...but essential to create pockets of space to just BE...to receive, regroup & revitalize in those zero-point moments where the revelations of your Truth can occur.
This is a let GO let LOVE moment that needs to be consciously integrated within the busyness...a good practice to find time/make space for YOU amidst any bustle of the approaching Holyday Season.”
