I learned to mask negative feelings with forced smiles and positivity as a child. My frustration? Invalid. My wounds? My own fault. If I wasn't so sensitive.....
So I'd force the smile, hide the tears and turn up the Eminem and Christina Aguilera on my walkman to drown the pain out. Until it happened again.
It's taken decades to identify and begin to unlearn the survival responses that had become my go to.. to freeze and fawn... And to learn that my feelings are always valid. I am allowed to feel frustrated or upset or hurt.
There's still an anticipation I feel that the finger will be reflected back at me if I do express something that has bothered me...The guilt, the blame still climbs up to the top reminding me of what history taught me...that if I pretend I'm not upset, the problem will go away.
Because the "problem" was no longer what I was originally upset about....but the way I was being treated for having expressed it.
So when I'm upset or hurt I become disregulated. Caught in a battle between frustration and guilt for being frustrated to begin with.
In healing I am learning that it's okay to feel upset or frustrated. We all do from time to time. We get annoyed with our spouses, our friends and each other. And it isn't the end of the world. Not for us, not for them. It doesn't always mean that there is a "fault" to be drawn out. Most often, there's just a lesson in healthy communication.
Sometimes we just need to sit with our feelings, with honesty, presence and allow ourselves to learn more about our needs, our wants through what these feelings tell us.
