Yesterday morning I woke from the 90 or so minutes of sleep I managed to carve out of a whole night of insomnia with the song Don’t Ask Me Why by Billy Joel playing in my head — Over and over to the point of distraction.

I was tired and emotionally raw all morning but I didn’t “know why,” as it were. I thought it was bc of all the strange changes going on in my life right now.

But, when the shooting happened, the thread of that feeling I’d had all morning was in it. That was the “why”. I felt it coming. I think we all did in our own ways.

This morning, the world has shifted. I feel like the split we’ve spoken of for so long has become much more pronounced. Some have decided to trade their humanity for evil taunting and celebration of the death of a human being. They have chosen Darkness.

But still others have had a wake-up call. A moment where they shook their heads and realized that what they watched yesterday was a horrific statement about the state of our world. And they said, “No. This is unacceptable.”
They’ve been activated.

For so many of us, though, yesterday was not a wake up call at all. It was simply another horror in the nightmare we’ve watched play out for years. For some it’s been decades.
We didn’t need to see that to open our eyes or strengthen our resolve, but we understand that many did.

My prayer today is that what’s happened (whatever that is, exactly) be a force for good and that it serve to call people back to their senses…
back to their Hearts.
