I never knew the United States had this many Antarctic Expeditions. Interesting that the first one was around 1820, but why? 👇
United States — Starting ~1820. Nathaniel Palmer (sealer) sighted the Antarctic Peninsula (November 1820). Major later: 1838–1842 (Charles Wilkes expedition, charted Wilkes Land coastline). Then prominently with Richard E. Byrd:
1928–1930: First Byrd Antarctic Expedition — established Little America base on Ross Ice Shelf; first flight over the South Pole (November 29, 1929, with Bernt Balchen, Harold June, Ashley McKinley); aerial mapping and discoveries including Marie Byrd Land.
1933–1935: Second Byrd Expedition — wintered alone at Advance Base (nearly fatal carbon monoxide incident); extensive inland exploration and meteorology.
1939–1941: U.S. Antarctic Service Expedition (Byrd's third) — first government-funded U.S. effort; bases on Ross Ice Shelf and Stonington Island; mapping and science amid pre-WWII context.
1946–1947: Operation Highjump (Byrd as officer in charge) — massive U.S. Navy-led effort (4,700+ personnel, 13 ships, aircraft carrier, dozens of planes); photographed vast coastlines, discovered new ranges, tested cold-weather ops.
1955–1956: Operation Deep Freeze I (Byrd involved in planning) — established permanent U.S. bases (e.g., McMurdo, South Pole) for International Geophysical Year (IGY).
