The deck is stacked. Our lives have been forced into a carefully curated hierarchy of priorities that discourage or prohibit thought of any real depth or meaning. Participants simply don’t have the time or the motivation to look beyond their immediate surroundings. One must step out of that matrix for any clarity. Those that do are met with overwhelm and ostracism which leads most to apathy. To complicate matters, superficial discussions of these matters provide an excellent opportunity to signal virtue for those with no virtue and those become the voices that drown out the voices willing to sacrifice something in pursuit of any real solutions. The whole system rewards complicity and punishes anyone who dares to display any real courage.

A collective shift beyond service to self into service of others could destroy this paradigm quite readily. The catalysis for such a shift might be our mutually assured destruction. This world war might offer those conditions but cannot afford the slow awakening most minds require. It makes me think of Charlton Heston ponding sand on a post apocalyptic beach in the shadow of lady liberty.
