President Joe Biden’s claims that there are no background checks at firearms sales at gun shows have drawn criticism, with fact-checking websites saying that it is false.

Biden during a White House speech on Thursday asserted that a person could buy “whatever you want” at a gun show without a background check.

“Most people don’t know it, you walk into a store and you buy a gun, you have a background check. But you go to a gun show, you can buy whatever you want and no background check,” Biden said.

According to federal law, commercial sales of guns have to be performed by an individual with a Federal Firearms License (FFL), who then has to perform a mandatory background check of the buyer and a record of sale, regardless of whether the sale occurs at the seller’s place of business, a gun show, or elsewhere. Gun sales between private individuals are exempt from these requirements, but it only applies to residents of the same state.

The law stipulates that the seller can only make the sale if they do not have reasonable cause to believe the buyer is prohibited from owning a firearm under federal law. Meanwhile, some states have laws that prohibit gun sales between a non-dealer and an individual.

According to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) (pdf), a firearms dealer has to get an FFL if they are “a person who devotes time, attention, and labor to dealing in firearms as a regular course of trade or business with the principal objective of livelihood and profit through the repetitive purchase and resale of firearms.”
“But,” the ATF adds, “such [a] term shall not include a person who makes occasional sales, exchanges, or purchases of firearms for the enhancement of a personal collection or for a hobby, or who sells all or part of his personal collection of firearms.”

For years, some politicians have invoked the so-called “gun show loophole” while pushing for new legislation restricting the sale or ownership of firearms. However, a private seller—who is not a dealer—can sell to another person without conducting a background check at a gun show or anywhere else.

Biden’s comment was declared false by Factcheck.org: “That’s wrong. In fact, federal firearm dealers must run a background check on a potential buyer at a gun show using the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System, or a similar state system.” It said that the president was likely referring to private sales between a non-dealer and an individual at gun shows.

“Hobbyists who sell weapons in one-off private transactions are not required to be licensed or to run background checks,” the ATF said in a news release last year in announcing the arrests of three Texas men who pleaded guilty to unlicensed gun dealing at gun shows.

Politifact also said the president’s claim was “mostly false.”.

Republicans also reacted to Biden’s assertion on Thursday.
“Joe Biden is either lying, never bought a gun at a gun show, or both,” former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows wrote on Twitter.

In his speech, Biden said he is taking executive action on guns, including regulating so-called “ghost guns,” declaring certain firearms using a stabilizing brace as rifles, and more. It comes after two mass shootings in Atlanta and Boulder, Colorado, that left 18 people dead.

Mexico’s top diplomat on Thursday said he expects a “constant and growing” stream of migrants in the coming year to flow across his country toward the United States from the so-called northern triangle countries: Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador.
Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard estimated that the United States would need to donate $2 billion a year to help stabilize the three impoverished nations in an attempt to eliminate the circumstances causing people to flee.

Ebrard said Mexico is also planning to invest in the region.
“If you look at the region from different points of view, but especially demographics and economics, it is clear the flows are going to be constant and growing in coming years,” Ebrard said. “The United States will have to allocate $2 billion per year for development in these countries, in Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador.”
The U.S. Border Patrol apprehended 172,000 illegal aliens last month, the highest since March 2001. An additional 1,000 per day are evading capture.
In February, border agents apprehended 101,000 people.

The surge coincided with the Biden administration’s revocation of more than a dozen executive actions and diplomatic arrangements put in place under President Donald Trump.

“I would argue that it’s the biggest surge that we’ve ever seen in the history of the Border Patrol,” Brandon Judd, president of the National Border Patrol Council, said during a roundtable with Republican members of Congress, Texas landowners, and law enforcement on April 7

On March 24, President Joe Biden appointed Vice President Kamala Harris to head up the border crisis response. She has yet to visit the border and has said that her focus is instead on providing more assistance to Central American countries.
Amid the surge, Biden’s top border coordinator will leave the administration at the end of April. The White House confirmed on Friday that Special Assistant to the President and Coordinator Roberta Jacobson, a former U.S. ambassador to Mexico, will step down.

“Biden knew there was no person better to usher in a more safe, secure, and just approach to our Southern Border.

Consistent with her commitment at the outset to serve in the Administration’s first 100 days, Ambassador Jacobson will retire from her role as Coordinator at the end of this month,” the White House said in a statement.

A fourth vaccination site in the United States has paused giving shots after a batch of adverse reactions.
Injections at the Cumming Fairgrounds in Forsyth County have been halted after eight people experienced adverse reactions post-vaccination, the Georgia Department of Health said Friday.

One person was evaluated at the hospital and released while the others were monitored onsite and later sent home.
All eight received Johnson & Johnson’s COVID-19 vaccine.
COVID-19 is the disease caused by the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) virus.

“The reactions were consistent with common reactions in adults being vaccinated with any vaccine, but due to the number of individuals affected, the site stopped the J&J vaccinations to evaluate,” Georgia health officials said in a statement.

In total, 425 people received vaccines at the fairgrounds on the day the adverse reactions were seen.

“There is no reason to believe there is anything wrong with the vaccine itself, and other individuals who have received the J&J vaccine should not be concerned,” Kathleen Toomey, the state’s health commissioner, said in a statement. “We are looking into what happened and what may have caused the reactions, including the conditions at the fairgrounds such as heat and the ability to keep the site cool.”

A mass vaccination site in Colorado was shut down earlier this week, as was a site in North Carolina, after a spate of post-vaccination adverse reactions.
“We are confident in saying that there is no reason for concern,” Colorado’s top medical officer later said after a review of each patient’s symptoms and an analysis of other vaccinations from the same lot.

A site in Iowa also experienced post-vaccination adverse reactions, Georgia officials said Friday.

The Iowa Department of Health’s phone line went straight to a recorded message on Saturday and its director did not respond to an email.

In a statement to news outlets, a spokesperson for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said officials are aware of “several incidents of vaccine recipients experiencing dizziness, light headedness, feeling faint, rapid breathing, and sweating (vasovagal or anxiety-related) symptoms following COVID-19 vaccines in Iowa, Colorado, Georgia, and North Carolina.”

“CDC is working closely with each of the state and local health departments to evaluate these incidents. CDC has performed vaccine lot analyses and has not found any reason for concern. Currently CDC and FDA are not recommending health departments stop administering any lots of COVID-19 vaccine,” the spokesperson added.

U.S. officials this week launched a study to investigate allergic reactions to COVID-19 vaccines, but Johnson & Johnson’s shot is not being studied in that trial.

A small percentage of vaccine recipients have experienced adverse reactions, including anaphylaxis, or severe reactions, and a subset of those have died.

The current allergic reaction rate post-vaccination is approximately two to five cases per million, according to the CDC and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Europe’s top medical regulator said Friday it was probing reports of post-vaccination blood clots among a group that had received Johnson & Johnson’s shot. At least three of the post-vaccination clots developed in Americans.

Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine is not yet being administered in Europe.

“We are aware that thromboembolic events including those with thrombocytopenia have been reported with all COVID-19 vaccines. Our close tracking of side effects has revealed a small number of very rare events following vaccination. At present, no clear causal relationship has been established between these rare events and the Janssen COVID-19 vaccine,” Johnson & Johnson told The Epoch Times via email.

Anyone who experiences the following symptoms after getting a vaccine should immediately seek medical care, Johnson & Johnson said: shortness of breath, chest pain, swelling in the leg, persistent abdominal pain, neurological symptoms, tiny blood spots under the skin beyond the site of injection, and excessive or easy bruising.

According to the FDA, the agency was already aware of reports in the United States of post-vaccination blood clots, including some that were associated with low levels of platelets in the blood.
“Both conditions can have many different causes. At this time, we have not found a causal relationship with vaccination and we are continuing our investigation and assessment of these cases. Our analysis of the data will inform the potential need for regulatory action,” the agency told The Epoch Times in an email. “During the post-authorization period, there is continuous safety monitoring of the COVID-19 vaccines by FDA and CDC. The goal of continuous monitoring is to quickly identify any specific safety concerns that may arise, and we will keep the public updated as we learn more.”

Evangelist Franklin Graham has defended Donald Trump’s legacy after Forbes reported that the former president’s wealth fell by nearly a third during his four years in the White House.

Forbes reported this week that Trump’s wealth had dropped from $3.5 billion to $2.4 billion throughout his presidency and fell nearly 300 spots on the magazine’s billionaire rankings. The magazine attributed the drop in wealth to Trump’s refusal to divest his portfolio when he took office in 2017.

Trump had “bogged down his presidency with ethics issues for years, while also missing a chance to cash in on a market boom he helped propel,” the Forbes’ report stated.

“President Trump did not even take a salary when he was serving as president—he gave it all back. So many politicians leave office with far more money than when they came into office,” Graham wrote in a statement in response to a media article on the news.

“This report says President Trump also dropped about $1 billion in wealth during those four years while he served. Donald Trump became president not to make money or to put his hand in the till, but to do his best to preserve the great things about this nation for future generations.
“He put America first, not his own interests. I’ve never seen anyone work harder,” he added.

Trump’s business holdings and financial activities through his business career were the subject of widespread scrutiny from his political opponents during his presidency as they sought to impeach the former president. Trump had faced multiple litigations over allegations that he had violated the the Foreign Emoluments Clause of the U.S. Constitution, which prevents any “person holding any Office of Profit or Trust under them” from accepting “any present, Emolument, Office, or Title … from any King, Prince, or foreign State.”

Two of the cases were thrown out by the Supreme Court in January on the grounds that the cases became moot after Trump left office.
Graham is the son of the late Rev. Billy Graham, a prominent evangelical Christian figure. He previously defended Trump during the former president’s effort to question election results and has been vocal about the need to protect election integrity.

He was awarded a Wellcome Trust Traveling Fellowship to study small-intestinal transplantation in Toronto. He was made a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists in the U.K. in 2001.

Wakefield has published over 140 original scientific papers, reviews, and book chapters. In 1995, as an academic physician working in a London teaching hospital, he was contacted by the parent of an autistic child with stomach issues. He soon learned from several other parents with autistic behaviors, that their children’s regressive behavior immediately followed an MMR vaccine.

He started investigating a possible role between gastrointestinal issues, the MMR vaccine, and neurological injury in children. In pursuit of this possible link, Dr. Wakefield participated in a study of twelve children with both stomach and developmental issues. The ensuing report, written with twelve other authors would catapult Wakefield into becoming one of the most controversial figures in the history of Medicine.
