Paul described the nature of the research being carried out at the WIV, known as “gain-of-function,” explaining that a resident virologist, Dr. Shi Zheng-li, has long been working on developing bat-based coronaviruses into more potent variants capable of infecting humans. So renowned is Zheng-li for this type of research that she has acquired the moniker “Bat Lady.”
“Gain-of-function research, as you know, is juicing up naturally occurring animal viruses to infect humans. To arrive at the truth, the U.S. government should admit that the Wuhan Virology Institute was experimenting to enhance the coronavirus’s ability to infect humans,” stated Paul, who is a physician and also has had the coronavirus.
Continuing, Paul related that “for years Dr. Ralph Baric, a virologist in the U.S., has been collaborating with Dr. Shi Zheng-li of the Wuhan Virology Institute, sharing his discoveries about how to create super viruses. This gain-of-function research has been funded by the NIH (National Institutes of Health); the collaboration between the U.S. and the Wuhan Virology Institute continues.”
But Fauci denied that the NIAID, a part of the U.S. National Institutes of Health, had indeed funded the collaborative work of Baric and Zheng-li: “Senator Paul, with all due respect, you are entirely, entirely, and completely incorrect.”
“The NIH has not ever and does not now fund gain-of-function research in the Wuhan Institute of Virology. Dr. Baric does not do gain-of-function research and if it is, it is according to the guidelines and is being conducted in North Carolina, not in China,” Fauci claimed.
Pressed on the type of research being carried out by Baric and funded by the taxpayer through the NIH, namely “inserting a bat-virus spike protein … into the SARS viruses,” Fauci contended that Baric was not carrying out gain-of-function research. Despite Fauci’s protests, 200 scientists signed a statement asserting that his work does qualify as gain-of-function, according to Paul.
“If you look at the grant and you look at the progress reports, it is not gain-of-function, despite the fact that people tweet that, they write about it,” Fauci insisted.
However, Paul noted that Zheng-li and Baric “collaborated on gain-of-function research where they enhanced the SARS virus to infect human airway cells and they did it by merging a new spy protein on it. That is gain-of-function. That was joint research between the Wuhan Institute and Dr. Baric. You can’t deny it.”
Tucker Carlson slams Fauci’s ‘authoritarian germ hysteria’
Fox News host Tucker Carlson picked up on the discrepancy, noting Fauci’s involvement in the creation and promotion of public health directives on account of SARS-CoV-2 while also being intimately tied to the origin of the virus and its spread throughout the world.
Carlson questioned Fauci’s “personal role” in the “pandemic,” asking whether his “authoritarian germ hysteria,” giving rise to endless mask mandates and border closures, might actually be a method to “divert attention from himself” and his funding of Zheng-li at the WIV.
The recent work of noted science journalist Nicholas Wade, who has written for academic journals Science and Nature, as well as editing science reporting in The New York Times in an illustrious career spanning half a century has given new weight to the idea that the Wuhan virus escaped from a lab in the Chinese city.
Wade published a detailed and lengthy article ennoscriptd “Origin of Covid — Following the Clues” in which he traces the various threads of the novel coronavirus, from the kind of virus it is to the money that made researching and creating it possible, ultimately placing its origin at the hands of NIAID funded Zheng-li and the WIV.
Speculations were raised about the possibility of the virus hailing from a Wuhan laboratory in the early days of coronavirus reporting at LifeSiteNews, as can be seen here, here, and here; Wade’s addition, in Carlson’s words, “all but proves it.”

Wade explained that Zheng-li and her colleagues at the WIV were conducting “gain-of-function experiments designed to make coronaviruses infect human cells … This is exactly the kind of experiment from which a SARS2-like virus could have emerged.” But the conditions of the labs in which Zheng-li worked were known to be subpar, insofar as safety standards are considered.
LifeSiteNews columnist Steven Mosher wrote in May 2020 that the “high containment” P4 lab in which Zheng-li was working was not safe enough to offset the lack of training and protocols observed at the WIV to merit certification from the World Health Organization (WHO). For reference, a bio-safety-level 4 (BSL4) lab is considered necessary for containing highly infective diseases in experimentation, such as gain-of-function on coronaviruses. The WIV lab was classified as BSL2, which is roughly equivalent to the “level of safety that you would find in a dentist's office in America.”
Yet the WIV continued to create “novel chimeric coronaviruses and was assessing their ability to infect human cells and human-ACE2-expressing mice,” according to Rutgers University molecular biologist Richard H. Ebright.
Wade admitted that due to her records being sealed, “(it) cannot yet be stated that Shi (Zheng-li) did or did not generate SARS2 in her lab … but it seems she was certainly on the right track to have done so.”
Following the money trail, however, Wade was able to identify a clear connection between NIAID funding and Zheng-li's super virus experiments.
Fauci, as head of the NIAID, had authorized funding to a group called the EcoHealth Alliance for five years, between 2014 and 2019. The group’s head, Dr. Peter Daszak, used the money to contract with Zheng-li on gain-of-function experimentation, according to Wade’s report.
Extracts from the grants demonstrate the precise use of funds by Daszak and the kind of experiments being conducted at the WIV, which Wade summarized as follows:
“Dr. Shi set out to create novel coronaviruses with the highest possible infectivity for human cells. Her plan was to take genes that coded for spike proteins possessing a variety of measured affinities for human cells, ranging from high to low. She would insert these spike genes one by one into the backbone of a number of viral genomes (“reverse genetics” and “infectious clone technology”), creating a series of chimeric viruses. These chimeric viruses would then be tested for their ability to attack human cell cultures (“in vitro”) and humanized mice (“in vivo”). And this information would help predict the likelihood of “spillover,” the jump of a coronavirus from bats to people.”
On account of Zheng-li's work, coupled with the conditions at the WIV lab, Wade said the use of federal funds “to farm out high-risk research to unsafe foreign labs using minimal safety precautions” was at least “a questionable policy.”
In fact, federal grants for gain-of-function research had been banned by the government, owing to safety concerns. Wade noted that this moratorium was in place “for the first three years of the grant to EcoHealth Alliance,” adding that a loophole had been written into the embargo.
“The moratorium specifically barred funding any gain-of-function research that increased the pathogenicity of the flu, MERS or SARS viruses. But then a footnote on p. 2 of the moratorium document states that ‘An exception from the research pause may be obtained if the head of the USG funding agency determines that the research is urgently necessary to protect the public health or national security.’”
Wade proposed that, to keep the funds flowing into Zheng-li's experiments, “either the director of the NIAID, Dr. Anthony Fauci, or the director of the NIH, Dr. Francis Collins, or maybe both, would have invoked the footnote.”

Ebright seconded Wade’s notion, adding more firmly that Fauci “exploited this loophole to issue exemptions to projects subject to the Pause – preposterously asserting the exempted research was ‘urgently necessary to protect public health or national security’ — thereby nullifying the Pause.”
Ebright complained further that, after the moratorium came to a close in 2017 and a reporting framework (P3CO) for dangerous gain-of-function research was set up, Fauci simply “declined to flag and forward proposals for risk-benefit review, thereby nullifying the P3CO Framework.”
Ebright added that Fauci has “systematically thwarted efforts by the White House, the Congress, scientists, and science policy specialists to regulate GoF (gain-of-function) research of concern.”
As the Wuhan virus began to spread across various parts of the world, the WHO launched an investigation into the beginnings of the pathogen’s life, appointing Daszak as their sole American representative. Given Daszak’s vested interest in gain-of-function work at the WIV, it may be no surprise that the report returned an “extremely unlikely” verdict on the virus originating in the laboratory.

Auditors found an entire database from a machine deleted, raising concerns

Dominion Voting Systems and Maricopa County officials are refusing to hand over passwords for election machines to auditors in Arizona.
Dominion said in a statement to news outlets on May 13 that it would comply with the audit, but Cyber Ninjas, the firm hired by the Arizona Senate to conduct it along with three other companies, is not accredited by the U.S. Election Assistance Commission.
“Releasing Dominion’s intellectual property to an unaccredited, biased, and plainly unreliable actor such as Cyber Ninjas would be reckless, causing irreparable damage to the commercial interests of the company and the election security interests of the country,” Dominion said. “No company should be compelled to participate in such an irresponsible act.”
Cyber Ninjas did not respond to a request for comment.
Maricopa County officials previously said that they did not have passwords to access administrative functions on Dominion Voting Systems machines that were used to scan ballots during the election, according to the Senate’s audit liaison, former Republican Secretary of State Ken Bennett.
“They’ve told us that they don’t have that second password, or that they’ve given us all the passwords they have,” Bennett told One America News at the site of the audit in Phoenix last week.
The county is also withholding routers from auditors, claiming security concerns.
Both routers or router images and access to election machines were part of the materials the state Senate subpoenaed late last year. A judge in February ruled that the subpoenas were valid and should be obeyed.
Arizona Senate President Karen Fann, a Republican, recently threatened to subpoena county officials if they didn’t stop their noncompliance with the subpoenas, but backed off the threat in a letter on May 12.
Instead, she asked Maricopa County Board of Supervisors Chairman Jack Sellers, also a Republican, to cooperate voluntarily by attending an upcoming meeting at the state Capitol to go over the audit issues.
Fann said auditors have found discrepancies in the ballot count, including one batch that was supposed to be 200 but only numbered 165. She also said the audit teams found an entire database directory from an election machine had been deleted, and that the main database for the election management system software was not located anywhere on the machine, suggesting that the main database for all data related to the 2020 election had been removed.
Sellers on Thursday indicated he would not attend the meeting and disputed the allegations.
Deleting files off the server “would be a crime—and it is not true,” he said.
“After reviewing the letter with County election and IT experts, I can say that the allegations are false and ill-informed. Moreover, the claim that our employees deleted election files and destroyed evidence is outrageous, completely baseless, and beneath the dignity of the Arizona Senate,” he added, calling for an immediate retraction of statements senators and their liaison team made on social media and to the press.
The Board of Supervisors, which held a closed-door emergency meeting on Friday, plans on holding a public meeting on Monday to address the matter.
Fann, an Arizona Senate Republican Caucus spokeswoman, and the liaison team did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Auditors Pack Up as Senate Signs Lease to Extend Audit
Auditors, meanwhile, began packing up on late on May 13 because the audit will take a break due to scheduling conflicts.
The audit has been taking place at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum on the state fairgrounds in Phoenix. High school graduations are scheduled to take place at the building beginning May 15.
Hand counting stopped at 7 p.m. on May 13 and workers began collapsing tables and preparing to move ballots to another location.

About 500,000 of the nearly 2.1 million ballots cast in Maricopa County in the 2020 election have been counted in the audit, according to Bennett.
The Arizona Senate signed an extension to their original agreement that allows auditors to store materials in the Wesley Bolin Building, which is also on the state fairgrounds, from May 12 to May 23.
The approximately 19,000-square foot building has a large open floor plan and two large roll-up doors, according to the Arizona State Fair website.
“Due to temperatures during the summer months, this building is not recommended for use between May through September,” the site states.
Bennett told The Epoch Times in a previous interview that the materials will be secure and that the site at which they’ll be stored can be tracked online via 24-hour streaming, just like the audit itself.
“There’s no deadline for the audit,” Bennett said. “The goal is not speed; the goal is accuracy and completeness.”
The audit teams can resume occupancy of the coliseum on May 23 and use it until June 30, according to a copy of the extended agreement obtained by The Epoch Times.
The original scope of work document from Cyber Ninjas said reviewing voter registration and votes case would take approximately 20 days and that work would be conducted remotely. The vote counting phase would take about 20 more days, it said, while the electronic voting system phase would take some 35 days.
But all three of those phases could be carried out simultaneously, according to the firm. An additional week was said to be required after completing everything else to finalize reporting.
The audit started on April 23.

CDC Director Says Children Under 12 Should Still Wear Masks

U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director (CDC) Director Rochelle Walenksy, after the agency eased its guidance on mask-wearing indoors, said that young children under the age of 12 should still wear masks indoors.
“So it is very clear that in the context of the last 24 hours, where we have a new vaccine now for 12-to-15-year-olds and now this new guidance being able to unmask if you’re vaccinated,” she said on PBS’s “Newshour” on Thursday. “We do need to update our camp guidance. That is going to be among the first that we are going to be updating.”
Walensky then said that for “younger children” who cannot get COVID-19 vaccines “right now,” the CDC “would still recommend we treat them as if they are unvaccinated and that they should wear masks.”
When asked on PBS about whether children should not wear masks outdoors, Walensky appeared to confirm the guidance: “Outdoors, right. So the same strategies really apply.”
“If you’re outdoors, if you’re in small gatherings, if you’re mixing with people in your household or another household outdoors, same principles apply, then you could take off your mask in outdoor settings,” she added. “If you’re wrestling, if you’re gathered over a soccer ball breathing heavily, lots of kids who you don’t know, we would still recommend masking in those settings.”
Earlier Thursday, the CDC said that fully vaccinated individuals don’t have to wear masks outside, unless state, local, territorial or tribal government guidance says otherwise. Private businesses can also require masks, the agency said, adding that vaccinated people should still wear masks on buses, trains, airplanes, and other public transportation.
In recent months, criticism has mounted over schools, businesses, and governments requiring small children to wear masks. Michigan issued a mandate requiring children aged 2 to 4 to have masks in public settings like camps, schools, or daycares.
“When the pandemic began, the lack of knowledge about COVID-19 justified this behavior,” wrote City Journal’s John Tierney last month. “That excuse has vanished. It became clear long ago that the virus is less dangerous to children than the flu, and that keeping schools open poses minimal risk of spreading infections. Yet despite this evidence—and despite the widespread availability of vaccines to teachers and other adults—many schools have yet to reopen full-time, and others are still making students as miserable as possible.”
Meanwhile, Fox News’ Tucker Carlson in late April said forcing children to wear masks outdoors should “be illegal,” arguing that it psychologically impacts young children and is tantamount to child abuse.
“Your response when you see children wearing masks as they play should be no different from your response to seeing someone beat a kid at Walmart,” Carlson said, adding that people should call Child Protective Services. The comment sparked criticism from several Democratic lawmakers.

The Department of Defense confirmed it is pulling 120 troops from Israel amid a flare-up in tensions between Jerusalem and designated terrorist groups in Gaza.
Pentagon press secretary John Kirby told reporters that U.S. Central Command and U.S. European Command staff flew on a C-17 military plane from Israel and arrived at Germany’s Ramstein Air Base on Thursday.
“We made this decision to remove these individuals in coordination with our Israeli counterparts,” Kirby said, adding that the military staff “were in Israel for a routine planning event” before the fighting escalated. The move was done as a precaution, Kirby said.
Israel carried out a number of airstrikes on targets in Gaza in recent days, including hitting buildings that were reportedly being used by Hamas—the group that rules over Gaza and was designated as a terrorist group by the State Department in 1997. The airstrikes were in response to Hamas and other groups firing rockets into Israel.
Israel’s military also confirmed it built up its presence along the border with the Gaza Strip and the Israeli Air Force bombed an underground tunnel network used by Hamas late on Thursday, according to the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) in a statement to the Jerusalem Post.
In the tunnel bombing incident, the Israeli operation included 160 aircraft as well as tanks and artillery firing from outside the Gaza Strip, Israeli military spokesman Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus said. Palestinian rocket barrages against southern Israel swiftly followed.
“What we were targeting is an elaborate system of tunnels that spans underneath Gaza, mostly in the north but not limited to, and is a network that the operatives of Hamas use in order to move, in order to hide, for cover,” Conricus told foreign reporters about the network.
Within the United States, leftist groups and some Democrats in Congress attempted to place pressure on the Biden administration to condemn Israel. However, the White House, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), and numerous Republicans have said that Israel has the right to defend itself.
“In our view, attacks from Hamas into civilian neighborhoods is not self-defense, so he certainly reiterated that, but also reiterated the need to move to de-escalate the situation on the ground,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters this week.
A number of world leaders including U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and French President Emmanuel Macron have appealed for an immediate ceasefire.

House Representatives on the Homeland Security Committee came to an agreement on a bill to establish a 9/11-style commission on the Jan. 6 Capitol breach—which was pushed by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) in recent months.
The bill, according to members of the committee, would include an equal number of Democrats and Republicans.
“It is imperative that we seek the truth of what happened on January 6 with an independent, bipartisan 9/11-type Commission to examine and report upon the facts, causes and security” of the incident, Pelosi said in a statement.
Members of the commission will be experts on law enforcement, civil liberties, cybersecurity, and civil rights, the committee said in a statement. It will also have the ability to issue subpoenas for information, although the subpoenas will require a bipartisan vote.
The 10-person commission will look into the factors that caused the incident and the “influencing factors that may have provoked the attack on our democracy,” the statement says.
“I am pleased that after many months of intensive discussion, Ranking Member Katko and I were able to reach a bipartisan agreement,” Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), head of the Homeland Security panel, said in a statement.
“The creation of this commission is our way of taking responsibility for protecting the US Capitol.” He was referring to Rep. John Katko (R-N.Y.), ranking member on the committee, who notably was among 10 Republicans to vote to impeach former President Donald Trump over his Jan. 6 speech that House Democrats claimed incited the Jan. 6 breach.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said the commission needs to examine events outside of the Jan. 6 breach, including deadly riots that erupted across the United States last summer.
“If this commission is going to come forward to tell us how to protect this facility in the future, you want to make sure that the scope, that you can look at all that came up before and what came up after. So that’s very concerning to me,” McCarthy told reporters on May 14.
Previously, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said the commission should expand its investigation into other civil unrest.
Trump, for his part, said that House Democrats—in their impeachment effort—made false accusations against him, and he accused them of continuing a “witch hunt” that occurred during his presidency. In his speech to supporters, Trump told them to “fight like hell,” but it appeared to refer to political engagement, not violence. He also said, “I know that everyone here will soon be marching over to the Capitol building to peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard.”
Some have criticized claims made by House impeachment managers regarding the death of Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick, saying the claims were later proven to be incorrect—that his death was later revealed by the D.C. Medical Examiner’s office to have been caused by a stroke, and his manner of death was deemed natural.
During the impeachment, House Democrats, citing reports from The New York Times and other media, claimed that Sicknick was beaten to death by a group of protesters on Jan. 6 before the NY Times updated its report to say there was no evidence to support that claim. For its initial report, the NY Times and other media had cited anonymous sources for the claim that Sicknick was killed by demonstrators.
Julian Elie Khater, 32, of Pennsylvania, and George Pierre Tanios, 39, of West Virginia, were charged with assaulting Sicknick with a chemical spray, officials said in March.
