These are the words of Maria Montessori, the founder of the Montessori method that promotes the autonomy and development of the child from a very young age.

But what does making a child self-reliant?

And how do you do that?

Since a young child has so many skills that need to be developed and refined and that will allow him to become self-reliant.

In order to do this, the child needs to ′′ do it himself ", despite the fact that in our society there is now a tendency to replace himself too often for the child (for fear that he is not capable or for rush and comfort).

And here's the key to change, the adult doesn't have to replace the child but accompany and support him.

The great work lies just in this, observe the child, trying to figure out what his interests and skills are and let him experiment.

Why do I feed him if he wants to do it himself?

Why do I wear shoes if he wants to try himself?

Why do I intervene immediately without him asking me when he can't reach a game or argue with his little brother?

What we're doing is actually delaying the child's acquisition of different capabilities.

And in some cases there are also ′′ tantrums ′′ because the baby wants to throw himself.

Even here, that's not a whim, but the expression of a need we're denying for some reason.

′′ Teaching a child to do alone and do small household tasks not only means making him more confident and increasing his self-esteem, but also helps to develop his intelligence and lay the foundation for good school results and his working future ′′ explains Jaquelin Bickel, an expert on childish language and learning.

Offering freedom, autonomy, respect and trust takes a lot of effort, but it's widely repaid by the serenity of the child.
