An alarming number of messages, pictures and videos have been flooding in of parents disobeying the health advice of Victoria's Chief Health Officer by cutting tape and restoring children's access to outdoor playgrounds.

I note that it is a fineable offence to touch or otherwise use outdoor playground equipment, and that the Chief Commissioner of Victoria Police has made it clear that his members will be patrolling parks and enforcing these health directions to keep us all safe.

By removing caution tape, cutting zip ties and restoring outdoor playground function you are effectively inciting children to break the law and perhaps more importantly - endangering us all by spreading the virus.

I cannot condemn it strongly enough. Respect the health advice, keep playground equipment taped up, and report any children playing on outdoor playgrounds to the Police Assistance Line on 131 444 or visit onlinereporting.police.vic.gov.au to lodge a report against those offending children.

Two new companion
reports released today by the World Health Organization (WHO) provide the first global recommendations to help establish human genome editing as a tool for public health, with an emphasis on safety, effectiveness and ethics.
The forward-looking new reports result from the first broad, global consultation looking at somatic, germline and heritable human genome editing. The consultation, which spanned over two years, involved hundreds of participants representing diverse perspectives from around the world, including scientists and researchers, patient groups, faith leaders and indigenous peoples.

“Human genome editing has the potential to advance our ability to treat and cure disease, but the full impact will only be realized if we deploy it for the benefit of all people, instead of fueling more health inequity between and within countries,” said Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General.

Potential benefits of human genome editing include faster and more accurate diagnosis, more targeted treatments and prevention of genetic disorders. Somatic gene therapies, which involve modifying a patient’s DNA to treat or cure a disease, have been successfully used to address HIV, sickle-cell disease and transthyretin amyloidosis. The technique could also vastly improve treatment for a variety of cancers.

However, some risks exist, for example, with germline and heritable human genome editing, which alter the genome of human embryos and could be passed on to subsequent generations, modifying descendants’ traits.

The reports published today deliver recommendations on the governance and oversight of human genome editing in nine discrete areas, including human genome editing registries; international research and medical travel; illegal, unregistered, unethical or unsafe research; intellectual property; and education, engagement and empowerment. The recommendations focus on systems-level improvements needed to build capacity in all countries to ensure that human genome editing is used safely, effectively, and ethically.
The reports also provide a new governance framework that identifies specific tools, institutions and scenarios to illustrate practical challenges in implementing, regulating and overseeing research into the human genome. The governance framework offers concrete recommendations for dealing with specific scenarios such as:

▪️A hypothetical clinical trial of somatic human genome editing for sickle cell disease proposed to take place in West Africa

Proposed use of somatic or epigenetic genome editing to enhance athletic performance

▪️An imaginary clinic based in a country with minimal oversight of heritable human genome editing that offers these services to international clients following in vitro fertilization and preimplantation genetic diagnosis


“These new reports from WHO’s Expert Advisory Committee represent a leap forward for this area of rapidly emerging science,” said WHO’s Chief Scientist, Dr Soumya Swaminathan. “As global research delves deeper into the human genome, we must minimize risks and leverage ways that science can drive better health for everyone, everywhere.”
What’s next
WHO will:

▪️Convene a small expert committee to consider next steps for the Registry, including how to better monitor clinical trials using human genome editing technologies of concern

▪️Convene multisector stakeholders to develop an accessible mechanism for confidential reporting of concerns about possibly illegal, unregistered, unethical and unsafe human genome editing research and other activities

▪️As part of a commitment to increase ‘education, engagement and empowerment’, lead regional webinars focusing on regional/local needs.

A member of the United Kingdom’s Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation watchdog agency has expressed skepticism about COVID-19 booster shots for all adults, coming as U.S. federal health officials said they would start pushing booster shots starting next month.

Speaking on a BBC program, professor Adam Finn said, “We will be imminently deciding that there will be some people who will need a third dose, particularly people who we know are very unlikely to be well protected by those first two doses.”

However, during the interview, Finn, a member of the committee, said that he was skeptical about the UK’s general rollout of COVID-19 booster shots. More data is needed, he said.

“We do need more evidence before we can make a firm decision on a much broader booster program,” Finn said. And, he added, the UK needs “to focus on individuals who are more likely, if you like, to get sick again if they’ve not got a booster.”

His comment came as the heads of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and National Institutes of Health said they will recommend booster shots for all Americans eight months after they got both doses of an mRNA vaccine.

The announcement drew indirect criticism from the World Health Organization (WHO), who previously called for a moratorium on booster shots in lieu of providing vaccines for poorer countries. Several WHO officials this week expressed concern over wealthier countries’ push for third doses of the vaccine.

Within the United States, several scientists expressed concern over the federal government’s messaging around boosters.

“The message I got from reading all three [studies] was that there may be some reduction in infection protection with Delta in nursing homes, but no data about waning protection from severe disease or hospitalization,” Dr. Walid Gellad, professor of medicine at the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Medicine, wrote on Twitter.

After the White House’s booster announcement, another expert, Johns Hopkins professor Marty Makary, who has advocated for a different dosing schedule for mRNA vaccines, accused the CDC, FDA, and major pharmaceutical firms of being a “medical oligarchy” and announced: “I will not be getting the booster.”

“Public health officials should have listened to chorus of doctors recommending the 2nd dose be given three months after the 1st—as the U.K. did (and I did for myself). Would have saved many more lives while rationing vax & avoided the need for boosters,” he said Friday.

Meanwhile, U.S. Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), who said he won’t get vaccinated because he’s already contracted COVID-19, tweeted that the FDA and CDC are misleading the public.

“Just last month, CDC & FDA said no booster needed. At the time, they worried that the truth about long-term vaccine efficacy would cause ‘vaccine hesitancy,’” the Kentucky Republican wrote. “They ignored widely available data and drug manufacturers, because both indicated efficacy had dropped significantly.”

San Francisco’s COVID-19 Vaccine Passport Mandate Begins for Restaurants, Gyms

San Francisco’s vaccine mandate requiring bars, restaurants, and gyms to check customers’ vaccination status went into effect starting on Friday, Aug. 20.

The vaccine checks in San Francisco started Friday in certain businesses, according to some business owners.

“There’s definitely some anxiety around how it’s all going to work,” said Pete Sittnick, a managing partner of Waterbar and EPIC Steak restaurants, according to CBS News. A slowdown of guests entering the restaurant is expected, he said, adding there will also likely be pushback from people who disagree with the mandate or scenarios where people show up without documentation.

Sittnick noted that if someone doesn’t have their vaccine card or other information, “they can still eat outside.”

“There is an option and we just need to be ready for different scenarios,” Sittnick said.

Pearce Cleaveland, co-owner of the Temple nightclub, said his security guards have been trained to check all forms of vaccination proof, as well as falsified copies of vaccination cards.

“We’ve had people who get upset at the door when they’re turned away, but in general they’re understanding,” he said. “It’s the tourists who are generally disappointed, when they’re unaware of the requirement and can’t get vaccinated quickly enough.”

Earlier this month, coming on the heels of an announcement from New York City officials, San Francisco Mayor London Breed said that the city “will be requiring proof of vaccination for patrons and employees in a number of indoor settings, including bars, restaurants, gyms, and large events.” According to the mayor, a Democrat, such a mandate will reduce the spread of COVID-19, the disease caused by the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) virus.

“The requirement for proof of full vaccination for patrons at indoor public settings is effective August 20,” she wrote in a series of tweets at the time. “The requirement for staff is effective October 13 to allow time for full vaccination. This order doesn’t include individuals ordering or picking up food or drink to go.”

The systems being deployed by New York City and San Francisco have received significant blowback from business owners and locals, who have argued the move is unlawful and violates individuals’ right to privacy.

A number of restaurants filed a lawsuit this week against New York City over the vaccine passport system, according to the Independent Restaurant Owners Association Rescue. They are seeking an injunction against the citywide mandate.

The order, the association said, is not only “arbitrary, irrational, unscientific and unlawful,” but it would “severely impact” the business, livelihoods, and businesses of members of the group.

Irene Siderakis, owner of Kellogg’s Diner in Brooklyn, said she will file a lawsuit against Mayor Bill de Blasio over the passports and announced she will not comply with the city’s guidelines.

“We’re suing Mayor de Blasio because he’s not letting me run my business with all the rights that I have,” Siderakis told “Fox & Friends” on Thursday morning. “I already have a $1.4 million judgment against me from the first mandates that our governor and our mayor put on us the first time around, and now this. They’re breaking me.”

Across France, as the country mandated vaccine passports for certain activities, thousands of demonstrators took to the streets over the past month.
