In a brief segment on UK Column News this afternoon, I gave an update on the utterly inappropriate plans for the Holocaust Memorial in Victoria Tower Garden. The parliamentary committee supposedly scrutinising the Bill have pulled their punches, or so it seems.
However, bearing in mind that the teaching of the Holocaust is the only compulsory component of the entire history curriculum, perhaps that should not come as a surprise.
Were you aware of that?
"In recognition of its significance, the Holocaust is the only historic event which is compulsory within the history curriculum. Pupils must be taught about it at Key Stage 3 (usually when pupils are aged 13-14).
The Holocaust has been a named topic within the history curriculum since the first curriculum of 1991."

How we ensure young people continue to be taught about the Holocaust and the lessons it teaches us today
Every January we stop to reflect on Holocaust Memorial Day. Education has a vital role in eradicating antisemitism and making sure young people are aware of the atrocities of the Holocaust. Unless we all actively try to understand the horrors …

Here, enshrining teaching of the Holocaust in law is seen as "balanced". Might there be other historical events, in British history, to balance this with?
"The National Curriculum
In England, by law children are to be taught about the Holocaust as part of the Key Stage 3 History curriculum; in fact, the Holocaust is the only historical event whose study is compulsory on the National Curriculum. This usually occurs in Year 9 (age 13-14). While academy schools do not have to follow this syllabus, it is assumed that they will deliver Holocaust education as part of a “balanced and broadly based” curriculum. Similarly, although independent schools are not obliged to deliver the National Curriculum, many in fact do."
