Exploring the application of immunotherapy against HIV infection in the setting of malignancy: A detailed review article

New paper by CIP Members

🌀ART significantly lowered AIDS-defining malignancies to a nadir, however, Non-AIDS defining cancers are on the rise.

🌀It is hard to make HIV/AIDS vaccines/drugs because of the high mutation rate to a lack of proof-reading functions.

🌀The new ART drugs like Ibalizumab and Pro 140 hold the future landscape of HIV management.

🌀Combinations of ART immunotherapy and cancer immunotherapy drugs offer a glaring promise for treating malignancies in PLWH.

🌀More PLWH with cancers should be included in studies to advance understanding of the effects of new interventions in them.

Autoantibodies targeting GPCRs and RAS-related molecules associate with COVID-19 severity

New Paper by USERN Interest Group

🌀COVID-19 shares the feature of autoantibody production with systemic autoimmune diseases.

🌀Here we show, by a cross-sectional study of 246 individuals, that autoantibodies targeting G protein-coupled receptors (GPCR) and RAS-related molecules associate with the clinical severity of COVID-19.

Severe COVID-19 Shares a Common Neutrophil Activation Signature with Other Acute Inflammatory States

New Paper by USERN Interest Group

🌀Severe COVID-19 patients present a clinical and laboratory overlap with other hyperinflammatory conditions such as hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH).

🌀These genes are dysregulated at the protein level across several COVID-19 studies and form an interconnected network with differentially expressed plasma proteins that point to neutrophil hyperactivation in COVID-19 patients admitted to the intensive care unit.

🌀scRNAseq analysis indicated that these genes are specifically upregulated across different leukocyte populations, including lymphocyte subsets and immature neutrophils.

Role of genetic polymorphisms in recurrent aphthous stomatitis: A systematic review and meta-analysis

New Paper by USERN Interest Group

🌀IL-10, 819 (T allele) and IL-10-1082 (G allele) are associated with increased risk of RAS.

🌀IL-1β+3954 (T allele) and IL-6-174 (G allele) are associated with increased risk of RAS.

🌀IL-1β-511 (C allele) and IL-10-592 (C allele) are associated with decreased risk of RAS.

🌀Cytokines variants are potential predictors of RAS.

🌀Serotonin transporter (L/S) polymorphism is associated with risk of RAS.

Central Inflammatory Cytokines in Tuberculous Meningitis: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

New Paper by USERN Interest Groups

🌀No formal agreement exists regarding central inflammatory cytokine aberrations in tuberculosis (TB). We undertook a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies comparing cytokine levels in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from patients with TB compared with controls.

🌀This study should be considered an explorative meta-analytic review, leading us to offer the best TBM-associated central inflammatory cytokines. Our study could prepare a panel of central cytokines as a potential aid in diagnosing TBM and its differentiation from meningitis of other etiologies.

Quercetin potential effects against SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19-associated cancer progression by inhibiting mTOR and hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α)

New Paper by USERN Interest Group

🌀Globally, the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has spread rapidly, with millions of confirmed cases.

🌀Based on the studies, it seems that cancer patients not only are more prone to experience severe complications and death by COVID-19, but also cancer progression by COVID-19.

🌀We hypothesize that quercetin, as a safe flavonoid that exists in various fruits and vegetables, not only can be used as an anti-COVID-19 component with potential effects on interfacing the viral entry, replication, and its inflammatory activity but also can disrupt the signaling pathways stimulated and upregulated factors by SARS-CoV-2 infection (e.g., mTOR, HIF-1α, etc.), which may lead to cancer progression.

Neurological and neuropsychological adverse effects of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines – where do we stand?

New Paper by USERN Interest Group

🌀We discuss different neurological and neuropsychological adverse effects of COVID-19 vaccines including demyelinating diseases, Bell’s palsy (BP), cerebrovascular complications, seizures, functional neurological disorders (FNDs), and some other rare adverse events, and hypothetical mechanisms which can lead to the reported side effects.

🌀Given the fact that the incidence of such events are rare and most of them are treatable, the current review aims to shed light on how much the relationship between COVID-19 vaccines and these complications can be reliable.

Hyper IgE syndromes: A clinical approach

New Paper by USERN Interest Group

🌀There are several distinct immunodeficiency disorders which are phenotypically similar to HIES.

🌀The diagnosis of HIES is typically based on the clinical suspicion and immunological assessments.

🌀The genetic diagnosis is important for the therapeutic approaches.

Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) after SARS- CoV-2 vaccination: A case report

New Paper by USERN Interest Group

🌀Here, we present a 37 y/o male patient with progressive muscle weakness in all limbs along with dysphagia following COVID-19 vaccination.

🌀Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed typical imaging findings which presented as multifocal T2-FLAIR signal changes in the corticospinal tract, pons, and temporal lobe with diffusion restriction.

🌀Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) further confirmed the diagnosis by the typical elevation of the Choline and Myoinositol peaks.

Cytokine-induced killer cells mediated pathways in the treatment of colorectal cancer

New Paper by USERN Interest Group

🌀Cytokine-induced killer (CIK) cell therapy is a type of adoptive immunotherapy that due to its high proliferation rate and anti-tumor characteristics, is being investigated to treat various solid tumors.

🌀This review aims to summarize the clinical studies that investigated the safety and clinical efficacy of CIK cell therapy in CRC.

Role of serology tests in COVID-19 non-hospitalized patients: A cross-sectional study

New Paper by USERN Interest Group

🌀We have surveyed 1,363 outpatients with suspected COVID-19 in Tehran, Iran. The analysis emphasized on characteristics of patients with positive PCR or serology of SARS-CoV-2.

🌀Conclusion: Assessing antibody titers in outpatients is invaluable due to the epidemiological importance of investigations in mild or even asymptomatic cases. Since the number of such studies in non-hospitalized patients is not high, the current study can be used as a comparison model.
