Title: Tuning Graphene’s Electronic and Transport Properties via Adatom Deposition
Speaker: Ali Khademi (University of British Columbia)
Date/Time: Monday, 1396/02/18, 15:30 دوشنبه
Place: Conference Hall, Department of Physics, University of Tehran, Kargar Avenue, 19th Street, Tehran.
Abstract:
There are many theoretical predictions for tuning graphene's properties via adatom deposition. However, only a few of them have been observed experimentally. Solving this enigma of inconsistency between theory and experiment raises the need for deeper experimental investigation of this matter.
To solve the mystery of inconsistency between theory and experiment, we started with a transport investigation investigate what is arguably the simplest of all adatom effects on graphene: charge doping by alkali atoms (Li) deposited under cryogenic ultra-high vacuum conditions. It was found that doping cannot be achieved completely without in situ 900 K annealing. This observation demonstrates the critical role of in situ high-temperature annealing in creating reliable adatom-graphene interactions [1].
Another important result of this research breaks the naive picture of alkali adatoms as a source of only long-range scattering in graphene. We present the first experimental evidence of short-range scattering from alkali adatoms in graphene and its effect on enhancement of intervalley scattering. According to this revised picture, alkali atoms act as both long-range and short-range scatterers on graphene.
Finally, the effect of copper deposition on graphene exfoliated samples was probed. Cryogenic deposition of copper increased the dephasing rate of graphene. This increase in dephasing rate is either a sign of inducing Kane-Mele spin-orbit interaction or of magnetic moments by copper.

Title: Ultracold fermions in a cavity-induced artificial magnetic field
Speaker: Dr. Ameneh Sheikhan ( University of Bonn, Germany)
Date/Time: Monday, 1396/0 3/01 , 15:30 دوشنبه
Place: Conference Hall, Department of Physics, University of Tehran, Kargar Avenue, 19th Street, Tehran.
Abstract:
The tailored generation of topologically non-trivial quantum phases is of greatest interest as these phases possess special properties such as extended edge states that can be well protected against destructive environmental effects. The dynamic control and detection of such phases still remain a great challenge. In order to overcome these difficulties, we propose a mechanism by which the dynamical feedback between the atoms and the optical cavity mode leads to the emergence of an artificial magnetic field and to self-organizing topological phases. Fermions confined to an optical lattice with ladder geometry form either a chiral insulator or a chiral liquid carrying chiral currents. In two dimensions, fermions are found to self-organize into topologically non-trivial phases characterized by their corresponding edge states.
