UK government borrowing in September ROCKETS to highest level for the month in five years, official figures show, highlighting the challenges facing the chancellor ahead of next month's Budget.

Borrowing - the difference between public spending and tax income - was £20.2bn in September, up £1.6bn from the same month last year, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said.

A rise in debt interest payments offset the increased amount the government had raised through tax and national insurance, the ONS said.

Borrowing over the first six months of the financial year has now reached £99.8bn, which is up £11.5bn from the same period last year.

POLICE have arrested a suspect in connection with the rape of a teenage girl.

The young girl was reportedly sexually assaulted by an unknown man in a park in Kent on Saturday October 18.

Police had released a statement that said they were looking for a man in his mid 30s, around 5ft 8in.

He was described as having dark hair tied in a bun, a short beard and a moustache.

HMRC has confirmed that it will begin taking money directly from bank accounts in the government’s latest bid to crackdown on unpaid tax.

The tax authority says it is rolling out use of the ‘Direct Recovery of Debts’ powers, which require banks and building societies to pay directly from the accounts when requested.

This will only affected “the minority,” it claims, used only for businesses and individuals who “can afford to pay what they owe but are choosing not to.” The order can be given to banks, building societies, and ISA providers.
