Calls for the return of face masks caused a political row today after an NHS leader said Britons experiencing flu or cold symptoms should wear one in public places.

Daniel Elkeles, chief executive of NHS Providers, which represents trusts, said it was vital for workers to 'stop the chances of you giving your virus to somebody else'.
Mandatory mask rules have been imposed over recent weeks in parts of hospitals in London, Lincolnshire, Shropshire and Oxfordshire amid alarm at infection numbers.

Downing Street said wearing a mask to prevent the spread of respiratory illness was 'something people can consider' - but Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch branded them a 'barrier to social interaction' and told the Government not to mandate them.

A PAIR of paedophile cousins have been jailed for 30 years for grooming & raping vulnerable teenage girls in a “campaign of rape”.

Manzorr Hussain and Imitaz Ali were branded the “scum of the earth” by one of their victims at Monday’s sentencing.

Hussain, 54, is from Manchester Road in Bury & faces 30 years for seven counts of rape and a further seven counts of indecent assault against five girls.

Ali, from Ainsworth Road in Radcliffe, was jailed for 28 years after being convicted of seven counts of rape, five counts of indecent assault and one count of attempted indecent assault.

The 53-year-old started abusing the girls with his relatives shortly after his arrival from Pakistan in 1996.

His other cousin, Hussain’s older brother, Ghulaim Hussain was arrested during the police investigation but fled the country.

The 64-year-old did not stand trial and is thought to be in Pakistan.

Jailing both men, Judge Bernadette Baxter told them: “You have shown not one jot of remorse or insight into your behaviour.

The Trump administration is set to require foreign tourists to hand over the past five years of their social media history in order to enter the United States.

The drastic move was the latest attempt by President Donald Trump to scrutinize those entering the country, after an immigration freeze from 19 countries was announced last week.

Social media data would be required for any people entering the United States, including countries like the United Kingdom and Germany who don't mandate visas for travel.

It follows a June announcement by the State Department that ordered travelers to make their social media profiles public.

People entering the US will also be asked to provide email addresses, phone numbers and information on their family members in order to achieve safe passage.

Portsmouth City Council ban Christmas wreaths.

Liberal Democrat-run Portsmouth City Council turned Scrooge as it told tenants that they could not hang a wreath on the front-door of their flat.

Housing officers from the council sent out hundreds of letters threatening Christmas-loving locals with fines and removal should they not comply with the order.

The letters insist that tenants "must not leave items in the communal areas" to abide by their tenancy agreements.

Women and girls are being targeted by sexual predators in mixed changing rooms, a report has claimed.

Eighty sexual assaults, 16 rapes and 65 incidents of voyeurism happened across leisure centres in England and Wales in 2023, according to police data obtained by the Women's Rights Network (WRN).

Beyond workplaces and schools, it is not compulsory for a service provider to offer single-sex facilities.

However, once it is indicated that a space is single-sex, such as women's toilets or changing rooms, then they must only be used by women.

A man has been found guilty of murdering his ex-partner's sister and her three children in a house fire.

Prosecutors said Sharaz Ali, 40, was "motivated by jealousy and fuelled by drink and drugs" when he set fire to Bryonie Gawith's home early on 21 August last year.

Jurors heard that Ali went to the home in Westbury Road, Bradford, aiming to "take revenge" on his ex, Antonia Gawith, who was staying there after ending their "abusive" seven-year relationship earlier that month.

Antonia Gawith managed to escape, but Bryonie Gawith, 29, and her children Denisty Birtle, nine, Oscar Birtle, five, and 22-month-old Aubree Birtle died in the blaze.

A sperm donor who unknowingly harboured a genetic mutation that dramatically raises the risk of cancer has fathered at least 197 children across Europe, a major investigation has revealed.

Some children have already died and only a minority who inherit the mutation will escape cancer in their lifetimes.

The sperm was not sold to UK clinics, but a "very small" number of British families, who have been informed, used the donor's sperm while having fertility treatment in Denmark.
