Brits will be urged to use pillowcases, bedsheets or coffee filters to make safe drinking water in the event of an extended UK blackout.

Households will also be told to eat chilled or defrosted food before tinned items, cook on camping stoves in the garden and make sure family members receive enough nutrition.

And those who aren’t able to boil water or use purification tablets will be informed they can use regular unscented, household bleach to purify it.

The public health advice was revealed in noscripts published by the government which would be read out by the UK’s chief medical officers, including Professor Chris Whitty, on BBC Radio 2 and Radio 4 during a nationwide blackout.

Foreign spouses brought to live in Britain are costing the taxpayer tens of billions over their lifetimes.

A damning report found that foreign-based partners who arrive on a visa will each end up costing the state an average of £109,000 if they stay for the rest of their lives.

Britain saw another 1,300 small-boat arrivals during the past five days, the audit also concluded that migrants entering through asylum and refugee routes make an 'unambiguously negative' contribution to public funds.

New figures in a report from the Government's official immigration advisers, the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC), highlighted the immense cost of immigration to the public purse.

A firebug who caused £60,000 worth of damage after he torched his own home has dodged jail.

Anup Singh Padam, 37, set fire to the rented property in Hamilton, Lanarkshire. Emergency services raced to tackle the blaze in May 2023 but found Padam to be evasive as to the reason behind the fire.

Firefighters were met with an 'unbelievable' smell of petrol in the house as they worked to extinguish the flames through thick black smoke.

They did not believe his claims that a chip pan had caught fire and he changed his story three times.

An investigation led to Padam being arrested and charged after firefighters found the blaze had started in two areas of the kitchen and no trace of a chip pan.

Padam, of Cambuslang, denied any wrongdoing and went on trial at Hamilton Sheriff Court. A jury convicted him of wilful fire raising.

Sheriff Liam Murphy ordered him to be tagged for a year and put him under supervision for the same period.

The court was told the attacker then slapped his victim with an open hand, causing him to fall to the ground.

Mr Clark died three days later of his injuries, after being declared brain dead.

Williams later pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was jailed this morning.

Dozens of Labour MPs have threatened to rebel over David Lammy's plan to curb jury trials.

The Justice Secretary announced plans to reserve jury trials only for when defendants faced serious charges such as rape and murder, and those with a likely sentence of more than three years in prison, in a bid to ease the crown court backlog.

Karl Turner, the MP for Hull East, has written to Sir Keir Starmer urging him to drop the plans along with 38 other Labour backbenchers.

'Many more MPs, not on this letter, have said they will rebel if necessary,' Mr Turner wrote on social media, as he shared the text of the letter.
