European Union warns Maduro that "he cannot choose his opponents"

The European Commission (EC) said this Tuesday that the first step that Venezuela must take towards democracy must be the holding of "free, transparent and fair" presidential elections in 2024, and warned Nicolás Maduro that "he cannot elect his opponents.

In a debate in the plenary session of the European Parliament to talk about the latest acts of repression in that country, the European Commissioner for the Interior, Ylva Johansson, stressed that this is a "decisive" year for Venezuela and assured that the EU is willing to help the country to move towards democracy.

🇺🇾🇻🇪Uruguay calls its ambassador in Venezuela for consultations in the face of “unviable” elections

The Foreign Minister of Uruguay, Omar Paganini, stated this Thursday that he decided to call the Uruguayan ambassador in Venezuela, Eber da Rosa, for consultations to report on “worrying events” that would make the holding of free elections in that country “unfeasible.”

This was announced by Paganini through a publication on his X account (formerly Twitter) in which he also tagged the Uruguayan president, Luis Lacalle Pou.

The call for consultations to an ambassador consists of an order that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs sends to him to urgently travel to the country in order to report on a certain matter and receive particular instructions.

Last Thursday, President Lacalle Pou assured the press that the elections that Venezuela will hold in the second half of this year will not be free and democratic after the disqualification of opposition leader María Corina Machado.

10% of students in the private sector have left Venezuela

The vice president of the National Association of Private Educational Institutions (Andiep), Fausto Romeo, assured that 10% of the students enrolled in private schools have migrated from Venezuela.

Romeo expressed that this is a significant blow to the country's educational system, which has had problems since 2016, subsequently aggravated by the pandemic and its implications.
30 of the main rivers in southern Venezuela are affected by mining

Alejandro Álvarez Iragorri, biologist, environmentalist and coordinator of Climate 21, said: “Thirty of the main rivers in southern Venezuela are affected. We must remember that more than 80% of Venezuela's fresh water is from the Orinoco downwards, so we are losing an enormous capacity and potential that the country has."

"We are very concerned because such important rivers as the Caroní, the Caura, the Ventuari, already have strong signs of environmental damage in them," he said.

Likewise, he said that part of this environmental damage has to do with the deforestation process that is generating an increase in the amount of sediment carried by those rivers due to mercury contamination.

“Part of that sedimentation ends up in the Guri reservoir,” he indicated.
