They're calling him the most divorced man in human history
Every post Elijah Schaffer makes now just reeks of "the post his sons will recall with hatred when they're deciding on which roadside retirement home to toss him into in 40 years"

I dislike the thought of laughing at schaffer's misfortune, but the man excused his sins when caught by telling everyone his genitals function properly. He is going to experience everything that grows from the wild oats he's been sowing

JUST IN - Department of War names campaign against Iran: "OPERATION EPIC FURY 🇺🇸"

Ok so it's one thing that I woke up to the entire middle east being on fire right now - that sucks and I don't like it, I want peace and love and brotherhood between nations and all that.

But if we HAVE to set the entire middle east on fire, could we have maybe chosen a less millennial name for the operation?

33 “Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’ 34 But I say to you, Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. 36 And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. 37 Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil.
-Matthew 5:33-37

People are often left scratching their heads at this teaching from our Lord. Isn't God the God of oaths and covenants? He established Abraham's line by a solemn oath in Genesis 15. He carried that same unmovable promise to Isaac and Jacob and added yet more covenants to David's line and in Jeremiah He promised a NEW Covenant which is ultimately expressed as the Gospel!

And to add to this, God being the God of oaths and covenants, He imposes that sort of thinking on whoever would follow the Law. Israel swore to serve the Lord at Sinai and then Kadesh Barnea and then EVERY YEAR they were to affirm their oath of loyalty to the true God at Mount Gerizim and Mount Ebal (Deuteronomy 27). On the individual level, vows were regulated. There was the Nazirite vow, marriage vows, vows concerning inheritance, vows for lifelong servants, etc. How could Jesus tell us not to take oaths when oaths, vows, covenants - whatever they're called in any given moment - absolutely cover the entire Old Testament?

Well He isn't banning oaths or swearing. He's banning frivolity and manipulation in oaths. Note the context: just before this, Christ told people that they must not get divorced except in cases of adultery. When He says that, He is addressing those who have entered into sacred covenants with their spouses by *oath,* or vows. He is not abolishing marriage here! But anyone who wanted to divorce their spouse for some stupid reason isn't taking their marriage vows seriously.

If someone swears to do something, and they swear on a matter they can't control - heaven, earth. Jerusalem, or even their own head - then they are telling you that they don't *mean it.* Jesus condemns those who would manipulate people with high language and big promises that don't amount to anything. They swear on stuff they can't control, and thus they absolve themselves of guilt when they do not or cannot fulfill their promises. THAT is the kind of swearing and oath that Christ declares verboten, not contracts and vows by themselves.

A Christian's word should be as good as gold. We must never lie nor swear with weasely escape clauses - such things are from the devil. If you say "I will do this" to something, then your reputation as a Christian ought to be such that people *believe* you. Then, should you ever need to make a real and God-honoring oath, there will be complete confidence in your trustworthiness.
