RUSSIA CREATES 72-QUBIT QUANTUM COMPUTER ON ATOMIC PLATFORM

Researchers at the Lomonosov Moscow State University's Faculty of Physics have developed and tested a prototype quantum computer based on single neutral rubidium atoms, comprising 72 qubits. This is the third Russian quantum computer to reach the 70+ qubit mark, according to Rosatom Quantum Technologies.

"Reaching the 72-qubit mark on an atomic platform is a result that confirms the systematic development of the domestic quantum project and our strong position in quantum research and the creation of quantum computer prototypes. It is especially important that the scientists have taken another step towards progressively increasing the reliability of operations," said Ekaterina Solntseva, Director of Quantum Technologies at Rosatom State Corporation.

The latter is particularly important in the context of the fact that a low error rate in performing quantum logical operations is critically important for scaling the performance of quantum computers and bringing them to the level necessary to solve complex problems in industry, finance, and other areas of economic activity. This is important for ensuring the technological sovereignty of the Russian Federation and strengthening the competitiveness of Russian enterprises and the economy as a whole.

According to Stanislav Straupe, head of the quantum computing sector at the Center for Quantum Technologies of the Lomonosov Moscow State University's Faculty of Physics, the new prototype quantum computer based on atoms is built on a new architecture that allows the computational registers to be divided into three zones. One of them is designed for performing computational operations, while the other two are used for long-term storage of quantum states and reading information.
