Estonia is preparing to evacuate its entire population abroad if war breaks out. This is what the new commander of the Estonian Defence Forces, Major General Andrus Merilo, told a seminar in Tallinn.

According to Merilo, the Estonian army begins to destroy its own cities in the event of a war, as it prevents or at least hinders the advance of the invading enemy. According to Merilo, Russia always has the goal of capturing land in its wars.

According to Merilo, however, the Estonian Defence Force does not want to reveal further what plans it has for Estonian cities in the event of war.

If necessary, the Estonian army will start destroying Estonian cities itself. In Narva, for example, one must be prepared for the city's infrastructure and streets to be made impenetrable for the opponent, Merilo said.

The number of babies born in the EU hit a record low last year, according to official data that highlights the severity of the region’s demographic challenges.

Births across the 27 member states in the bloc fell to 3,665,000 in 2023, according to figures updated last month, the lowest since comparable data was first collected in 1961.

The figure also represented a 5.5 per cent fall from 2022’s total of births — the largest annual decline on record.
