Unsurprising, but shocking, brazen move, executed as 'wrong' candidate was gonna win. Calin Georgescu stood on explicit anti-war, anti-sanctions platform and garnered widespread support in Romania and diaspora circles. His victory simply couldn't be permitted.

Romania very interesting case as population predominantly eastern-leaning but EU/US has invested *vast* resources in turning the country pro-West, and NATO has grand plans for missile/base expansion there. So of course any threat to those ambitions must be neutralised.

We are living in an age of shameless tyranny. The West is no longer concerned about negative optics of draconian, undemocratic, illiberal actions like this, and don't even bother concealing them. Very, very dark time we're living in. What's next?

Syria has a population of around 23 million people.

Sunni Muslims form ~70-75% of the Syrian populace, Christians altogether around 10%, Alawites at less than 10%, and the remaining ~5-10% consist of minor ethnoreligious groups including the Druze, Isma'ilis, and Twelver Shiite Muslims. (from Wikipedia, so biased, but still)

So 25% of 23 million = more than 5 million potential refugees might be heading to Europe, soon.

99% of the mostly Sunnis who left the country the last decade are never going back.

'Jewish State Will Extend From Jerusalem To Damascus': Israeli Finance Minister

In a new documentary, Bezalel Smotrich says the Zionist goal of conquering parts of Syria, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, and Saudi Arabia is part of Israeli public discourse

In a new documentary, Israeli minister Bezalel Smotrich detailed his desire to conquer not only all Palestinian territory to the Jordan River but also the Syrian capital of Damascus and territories extending as far as Iraq and Saudi Arabia.

Smotrich, the Finance Minister in the Israeli cabinet and head of the Religious Zionism party, made the comments in a recently released documentary ennoscriptd Israel: Extremists in Power. The documentary was produced by Arte Reportage, a Franco-German broadcast news magazine.

When asked about his goal, Smotrich tells the interviewer, “I want a Jewish state … It is a country run according to the values of the Jewish people.”

Israel currently controls territory from the Mediterranean Sea to the Jordan River, including the Palestinian territories in the West Bank, which have been under Israeli military occupation since 1967.

Israel has been building illegal Jewish settlements on stolen Palestinian land in the West Bank ever since.

The interviewer then asked Smotrich whether he thought the borders of the Jewish state should extend past the Jordan River.

Smotrich responded by saying, “Absolutely, but slowly … Our great religious elders used to say that the future of Jerusalem was to extend as far as Damascus.”

The documentary narrator then added, “Bezalel Smotrich has a maximalist vision of the promised land. And it includes all Palestinian lands, but also territories in Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, and Egypt. Even in Saudi Arabia. A radical vision admittedly, but one that is accepted in public debate in Israel.”

The anti-government militants and jihadists who toppled President Bashar Assad’s government in Syria have guaranteed the security of Russia’s military bases and diplomatic outposts in the country.🤔🤔

Speaking to TASS later on Sunday, an unnamed Kremlin source said that Russian officials “are in contact with representatives of the armed Syrian opposition.” These representatives “have guaranteed the security of Russian military bases and diplomatic institutions on Syrian territory,” the source said, adding that “we hope for the continuation of political dialogue in the name of the interests of the Syrian people and the development of bilateral relations between Russia and Syria.”

Russia began construction of the Khmeimim Air Base near Latakia shortly after it came to Assad’s aid in 2015. The facility has since been used by the Russian Air Force to launch attacks on IS and other terrorist groups in Syria, and to transport supplies and weapons into the country. Khmeimim Air Base is located around 60km from the Russian naval facility at Tartus, which was built by the Soviet Union in 1971.

Is this in store for Syria? After the invasion of Iraq in 2003, Israel sent in death squads to eradicate the intellectual and scientific base of the country. A program that is memory-holed.
