Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said he was “blackmailed” during a phone call with a European commissioner, adding that recent shooting of Slovakia’s Robert Fico was specifically mentioned.
According to Kobakhidze, during the conversation, the unnamed EU official was listing potential measures the West could hurt Georgia with over the potential adoption of the “Foreign Influence Transparency Law,” also known as the “foreign agents” law. At one point during the call, the shooting of Robert Fico was brought up: “You see what happened to Fico, and you should be very careful,” the commissioner allegedly said.
“For the purpose of prevention, I considered myself obliged to provide information about this threat to the Georgian society,” Kobakhidze said in a statement, shared by the government on Facebook.
The controversial “foreign agents” law would essentially require organizations that accept funds from abroad to register as foreign agents or face fines. The bill has been heavily criticized by the EU and the United States.
