Researchers Achieve First “Sustained” Long Distance Quantum Teleportation
The quantum internet just became a lot more real.

The process doesn’t actually involve teleportation in the traditional sense. Quantum teleportation is the transfer of quantum states from one location to another. Through quantum entanglement, two particles in separate locations are connected by an invisible force, famously referred to as “spooky action at a distance” by Albert Einstein.
Regardless of the distance, the encoded information shared by the “entangled” pair of particles can be passed between them.

Alien-hunting scientists investigate mysterious radio ‘signal’ from star

Astronomers from the Breakthrough Listen Project — a $100 million mission to find life in space with radio telescopes — picked up a wave emission that they believe came from the Proxima Centauri star, which is 4.2 light-years away, the the Guardian reported.

The researchers, who detected the beam in Australia in April, said it’s worth probing because the frequency was consistent with the movement of a planet.

“It is the first serious candidate since the ‘Wow! signal,’” they group told the outlet.

Terrorism in the UK: number of suspects tops 40,000 after MI5 “rechecks” its list

MI5 is aware of more than 43,000 people who pose a potential terrorist threat to the UK, according to a government report — almost twice the number of terror suspects previously disclosed.

After the 2017 attacks at London Bridge and Manchester Arena, it was revealed that MI5 had about 23,000 current and historic suspects on its radar.

Arriba! 🇲🇽 Mexico approves rollout of national biometric digital ID card

The Chamber of Deputies in Mexico has approved the creation of the new General Law on Population, Human Mobility and Interculturality, paving the way for a new national digital ID system, Forbes Mexico reports.
The new law, which passed with 426 votes in favor, three abstentions, and one against, will enable the Ministry of the Interior to create a database with the personal data of Mexicans, including biometrics.

Countries across the world ban flights from UK due to “fast-spreading new” COVID-19 strain

A number of countries — including Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Austria, Belgium and Israel — have announced that they will ban flights from the UK due to fears over a new variant of the coronavirus, which could be 70% more infectious.

The moves come after the Dutch government confirmed at least one case of the same mutation that has prompted parts of Britain to return to lockdown rules.

California Sued over One-Gun-a-Month Purchase Limit

The Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) filed suit Friday against California over the state’s one-gun-a-month purchase limit for law-abiding citizens.

California has had a one-gun-a-month limit on handgun purchases since 1999, but legislation to expand purchase prohibition to all guns was signed by Governor Gavin Newsom (D) in 2019.

Has China Mastered Weather Modification? Should We Worry?
Using rockets and pickup trucks, Chinese officials are seeding clouds and bringing the rain. But do they have other uses in mind?

For now, the only international agreement that comes close to addressing such concerns is the convention on environmental modification. But that treaty only applies to “hostile” modifications, not the “peaceful” ones that China and other countries will surely claim for themselves if challenged. One way around this problem is to make weather modification a part of the climate-change discussion. Insofar as the technology is being used to counterbalance the negative effects of global warming, it already is. But future talks on the matter should discourage unilateral approaches. Instead, they should prioritize cooperative uses of weather modification, including data sharing, among all countries.

Child sex offender served leadership role at Portland Antifa autonomous zone

A serial sex offender and Black Lives Matter activist recently released from prison served a titular leadership role at the Antifa autonomous zone in north Portland.

Micah Isaiah Rhodes, 27, was convicted of three counts of second-degree sexual abuse of minors in 2018. He was sentenced to two and a half years in prison after violating probation by being near children during an Antifa occupation of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility.
