WHERE HAVE THE LARGE CONTAINER SHIPS GONE?
The news headlines focus on the total number of ships waiting for berths in the Port of Long Beach, which has risen from 40 in Feb to around 70 currently, an increase of 75%. Yet the aggregate capacity of ships in the offshore “parking lot” — has only risen by 34% over the same timeframe, because of the declining size of ships in the queue.
A significant change over the course of this year’s congestion crisis is that the average capacity of ships calling in L.A. / Long Beach has decreased, meaning that terminals handle more ships to move the same throughput.
Trans-Pacific services states the reason for smaller vessels: Virtually no larger container ships have been available for sale or lease in recent months; operators are adding capacity via smaller ships by necessity. [ Article ]

THE AIR FORCE’S NEW WEAPON IS …SHIPPING CONTAINERS?
Back in March 2020, this article appeared in Popular Mechanics. Drone maker Kratos Defense proposed inserting its new XQ-58A Valkyrie drone in modified shipping containers, which would then be shipped or flown to small islands in the Pacific. In the event of war, the drones could be quickly readied for action, flying long range missions deep into enemy territory while armed with precision guided bombs and air-to-air missiles. The concept, proposed by Kratos Defense, called for fitting a XQ-58A Valkyrie into a standard sized shipping container.
The XQ-58A is considered “runway independent”, meaning it does not need long runways for takeoffs and landings. [ March 2020 Article ]
This week China asserted that they had found a ‘Weakness’ in the US Combat drone. The article confirms China is also developing high-speed drones that it claims can attain speeds of up to Mach 5 [ Article ]

NEW YORK MAY TAP NATIONAL GUARD TO REPLACE UNVACCINATED HEALTHCARE WORKERS
Governor Kathy Hochul says she's considering employing the National Guard and foreign medical workers to fill hospital staffing shortages due to tens of thousands of workers refusing to meet her Monday deadline for COVID-19 vaccination. She said she plans to declare a state of emergency to increase the supply of healthcare workers to include licensed professionals from other countries as well as retired nurses. Roughly 72,000 workers, have not been fully vaccinated, the governor's office said.
Hochul had the nerve to attend a Sunday service at a large church in New York City to ask Christians to "help promote vaccines."
"I need you to be my apostles. I need you to go out and talk about it and say, we owe this to each other," Hochul told congregants at the Christian Cultural Center in Brooklyn. [ Article ]
