🧿 Serbia's Vidovdan. ☦️🇷🇸

Vidovdan (Serbian: Видовдан, lit. 'Saint Vitus Day') is a Serbian national and religious holiday, a slava (feast day) celebrated on 28 June (Gregorian calendar), or 15 June according to the Julian calendar. The Serbian Church designates it as the memorial day to Saint Prince Lazar and the Serbian holy martyrs who fell during the Battle of Kosovo against the Ottoman Empire on 15 June 1389 (according to the Julian calendar). It is an important part of Serb ethnic and Serbian national identity. - wiki

Some other things it is associated with:

- Serbian declaration of war against the Ottoman Empire in 1876
- Assassination of crown prince, Franz Ferdinand by Gavrilo Princip in 1914 which triggered the First World War
- On the 600th anniversary of the battle of Kosovo (1989), Serbian leader Slobodan Milošević delivered the Gazimestan speech on the site of the battle. This was the first public celebration of Vidovdan since the Yugoslav communist era.

🧿 How long have you been following the protests in Serbia, this multicast is from 2023, and today's turnout is abysmal compared to some of the others in the past 4 years.

Likewise "the students' " ultimatum runs out in about 30 minutes, after that provocations are expected.

The overwhelming majority of online commentator are calling for calm and restraint countering calls for Serb on Serb violence, which 'the blockaders' are threatening.

Mystery solved : during one of the speeches a lady asked everyone to turn on their flashlights and point to cameras so that "they can count how many of them there are" ... because we all know nobody can possibly have 2 or more phones.

🧿 The "mostly peaceful" so called "students" seem to be using Serbian flags to beat the police. Not to mention they are the ones who instigated the violence at multiple points around the city.

It continues. One of the live-s I'm watching is already 'reporting' that "a stampede has started".

🧿 Yesterday's protests all ended well, which is good. Turnout was weak compared to the last 3 years, and I can confirm from several verified sources familiar with the matter that many of my friends went for a walk, not at all "in support of the protests" just as an event and something to see.

Maybe next time I go too, it seems there were things to be seen. 😍

Oh yeah, in case you missed it, the ambulance is the new "sound cannon".

Likewise worth mentioning that the police showed extreme amounts of restraint, while watching city cams with a friend we noticed that even when the riot police pulled an instigator from the crowd, after passing the 2nd line of police they picked him up off the ground and walked him to the paddy wagon; no kicks while down, no elbows in the ribs and no bloody brow for tradition's sake, 'the Turtles' [as they are called here] were extremely reserved, which is commendable, especially on Vidovdan.
