Holy cow this is good! Everything you wanted to know about ball turret gunners. One of my teachers in high school was a ball turret gunner and was shot down over germany. He spent a couple years in a POW camp. He said if you fired those 50cal guns in too long bursts they'd get hot and droop like a limp dick (his words). He said they were bayonet mounted and they'd swap them in moments. The old bent ones were used for fence posts around the bases back in the UK. He did tell us tales about aircraft so badly damaged that both the landing gear and the ball turret couldn't move and an airplane had to do a belly landing with the gunner inside. Really brave men, it's a shame they fought the wrong side.

One more detail... my teacher's name was Alvin Nelson. In the movie "Heavy Metal" in 1981, they had a sequence with a belly gunner and called him by name "Nelson". I always thought that was cool.
